I want to buy a puppy, but I can't decide between a Pomeranian or Long-haired chihuahua. I live in a medium sized house, with a medium sized back yard, though in the future I'll probably live in an apartment. ( by in the future, I mean when I move out of my mom's place once I'm out of school. ) I want a small dog because it would be unfair to have a big dog in an apartment. ( that's my opinion anyway ) I could take the dogs for walks, but not ones that are too long, like two hours or something. And there's a nearby dog park so yeah. I love to pamper my pets, though I do make it clear who is boss. But I was just wondering if there is a large difference ( like in, say, their temperament ) between the two that might help me make a decision? Or something like that? Or maybe what's your opinion on the two breeds? Just something that would make it easier for me to decide... By the way, I really want a female, if that means anything. Thanks so much for any help! And feel free to post pictures if you own any Pomeranian's or Chihuahua's! <3
Hi if you buy a puppy, who will look after it while you`re at school? And train, socialise and play with it? I can`t help feeling you`re not really in a position to have a dog yet - no offence.
I get your point, and I'm not trying to be mean or disrespectful, but I feel otherwise. In my opinion, if I were to take what you were saying, then I would never be in the right position to get a dog. Because once I finish high school, there is the whole working a job thing to save up for college/uni, and then after that you have college or uni. So taking all that into consideration, I would probably have to wait until I retired to get a dog. But after saying that, I DO get what you mean. Which is why I'd get the dog at the beginning of summer, so I would have a whole two months to train/socialise it. And though I know two months is not all that long, it would get me to a point where I probably could keep the dog at home for a few hours by itself. And not to say I'm pushing the whole responsibility onto family, but if need be I could also have some family support for it on days where I'm gone a long time.
I don't have a dog and I don't have any real input on which dog to get (Although personally I prefer Chihuahuas) but I'm in reasonably the same position as you regarding school. Are you doing A levels or are you still doing your GCSEs? The only reason I'm even contemplating getting a dog (I'd be looking to get a 3 or 4 year old dog rather than a puppy as well) is because I'm in my 1st/2nd year of A levels leading up to a part time degree which means I have frees so I can pop home every 50 minutes or so to let the dog out and check he/she is okay and my mum is retired so there is always someone at home. I know you didn't ask for advice like this but as someone who is in the same position as you, I really really needed people to point this sort of stuff out to me because it seems a lot easier in theory than it actually is in practise! For example, it might seem okay to think you'll train the puppy in your 6 week summer holiday but even toilet training takes a lot longer than just 6 weeks and a puppy will be needing to go out regularly (say every 2 hours or so) meaning there'd need to be someone there all the time to let the puppy out while it is still being trained. Sorry if I'm overstepping the mark, especially considering I'm not even a dog owner yet but I know that when I posted a similar thread a few days ago, I wanted the brutally honest truth. At the end of the day, a living creature's welfare is at steak so you want to make sure you do everything you can to give it the best life possible
@Mag Don't worry, you're not overstepping! I too want honesty. And yes, I have considered school difficulties, don't worry. I had a thorough conversation with my mom, who has bred and raised many puppies. So she made sure I thought about EVERYTHING. And this kind of advice is fine as well. I'll probably need a lot of it. But again to restate this, I have thought about school, and I will be able to let my puppy out, and be with it most of the day. And when I can't be with it most of the day, my mom has agreed to watch it. So really, don't worry about being honest! If I hadn't thought about it, you would have had a VERY valid point!
I'm glad you didn't consider it overstepping and that you've obviously thought about everything (Like I have haha) Good luck with your puppy!
All the poms I've met have been really yappy so bear it in mind, maybe they are not all like that, but that was my experience. I have quite a few friends with Chis and one thing keeps coming up in the conversation - their toileting or peeing where they shouldn't! That could be a training issue I know, but a few of my friends have other dogs as well and it's only the Chis they have issues with. Would be nice to hear from people whose Chis don't have this problem!
Having had both the poms were more noisy than the chi, but any dog can be noisy if they are left to long on there own.
I own both a Pomeranian and a Chihuahua, i find that the Pomeranian requires more attention, and is more likely to yap. Although i would not change my pom for anything else, I would go for a Chihuahua having experienced owning a pom.
Yes your friends are correct,, it takes a longish time to house train chihuahuas & even they you couldnt say they would be 100% & i had them for many years both smooth & long coat. Ive never had poms but im told they can be very intelligent. Then again what you put into a dog is what you get You need to be aware inside every tiny Chihuahua is a gt dane, they dont know theyre tiny & it can get you & your little one into bother. Might find it funny but it can be scarey if threatened by a large aggressive dog protecting itself, so think seriously about what you really want. Visit a few shows, talk to. Breeders. KC will tell you what shows are on in your area Good luck
i have a long haired chi and he is adorable and been a delight to housetrain he is soo good! only had maybe 2 accidents in the house the whole time i have had him
Hi, I have a short haired Chi, who's just a mini whirlwind. He toilet trained in a couple of weeks but I think the owners play a huge part in that, we used to take him outside every 1/2 hour or so if he did something he got a treat and with him food is everything when we visit somebody we take him out on the garden so he knows which door to go to and I think we only had one mistake at my dad's house. Though you do have to be tough with these little dogs or they run rings round you, yes he gets cuddles but is not allowed on sofas ect. and upstairs is a no no, He's a smart little guy but can be snappy with strangers outaide but anyone can come to the house and he licks them to death. He also has a habbit of knowing what youre going to do before you eg, if I log off my laptop at night he knows it's out then bed. He's a doll and as he's getting older he's chilling out more. Hope you like walking he will go forever, though I keep him on an extendable lead to be safe. Good luck with your new puppy which ever one you choose xxx.
