You'd have to have shares in Fabreeze if you kept this dog in the house. Phew! they pong. they do produce A LOT of oils in their coat to protect them in extreme weather conditions out in the fields, and thats how the cords are formed and the smell! YUK nice looking dogs tho.
There is a girl called Lisa who is registered on here who has one called Tangle He lives with a couple of male Rotts and another dog called Feck She is the one to talk to
Looking at the KC site, there were only 8 registered last year, you might have a long wait http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/download/3079/Quarterly-breed-stats-pastoral.pdf
Anything you want to know ask away. I researched the breed for years before finally getting one. They call me "Yoda" in the Komondor club lol
7 puppies born last year May 6th and one import. There is a litter due this week but won`t be any more for quite a while, the usual gap between litters is 4 years.
How long do they take to get fully corded? Is the 4-yr gap down to the rarity of the breed, or is there a reason to let them mature longer?
Komondors are like any other flock guardian. They make wonderful family dogs IF they are thoroughly socialised. Some people have a real downer on flock guardians, but in the right hands they are lovely pets. I've met a few at shows. They are huge, but all the ones I've met have been pretty even tempered. (and yes they do stink - big time!)
Both, bitches are best bred from after their 3rd birthday and most males don`t mature until they are 4yrs. We`ve been very lucky over the last 18mths there have been just over 20 puppies born and another litter due this week our numbers are up to around the 60 mark now, the problem we have now with future breeding is about 70% of the Koms in the country are too closely related. They should be fully corded by the time they are 2yrs old, some take a little longer, some you have to help along the way, some just cord on their own.
You are so right they do make lovely pets Tangle is well socialised and loves people especially kids, they are hard work though and you can`t slack in training with them, they like to do things their way but as long as you are consistant and firm you get there in the end lol Males also tend to be a little defensive if confronted with another male...Koms give little if no warning they are going to dislike something so you have to be on your guard all the time but .......I wouldn`t be without mine, he`s a loveable giant brillo pad that pushes his luck sometimes, he makes us laugh and he brings home a rosette or two now and again lol
He sounds a real character - if you are at Crufts on the Thursday I will make a point of seeking you out, or any Koms in DD.
I`ll be there...Thursday showing, Friday and Saturday DD and Sunday I`ve been promised a Mother`s Day shopping spree wahay!! We have 10 dogs entered for crufts ranging from 10mths to 4 years old so you will be able to see the different stages their coat goes through (velcro, brillo, mop)
