What kind of collar for a Miniature Pinscher?

    hi,
I have a 10 week minpin. He will be having his 2nd vaccination this friday and his first walk a couple of weeks later. I'm not sure of what collar to buy. I currently have a half check fabic collar but will this be ok for walks or do i need a normal leather collar or does this breed need a harness because of its size?. Sorry! so many questions on my first post:blush:

    thanks

I am not sure if you would need a harness or not but not not use a half check or a puppy or small dog. A nice flat collar would do I guess.
If you take the dog to a pet shop with you then you can try some on to see what you like best. I guess they can advise you on the harness as well.

Thanks. The breeder recommended the half check because(she claimed) this breed will wriggle out of other collars. He will need to grow a little more as he doesn't yet fit into the smallest available in the pet shop!. I may buy a handmade leather collar for him.

Maybe a harness would be best then if he to small for a collar.

Hi, I have 2 Min Pins, and I dont use half checks on either of them.
When they were tiny puppies to get them used to a collar I actually had to get cat collars (take the bell off though as it's very annoying jangling all the time ).
Then I bought some tiny flat collars off of ebay ( the size was XXS ).
I'd be wary about putting a half check chain on something so small as a Miniature Pinscher puppy as their necks are so very thin and delicate and i'd be worried about causing damage if the half check was pulled too tight.

Good luck with your new Min Pin Puppy :)

Thanks bugzy. I wasn't keen on the half check for the same reason but i hadn't even thought of a cat collar.

I use harnesses. I prefer them over collars. I don't use half check or full choke on any of my dogs. I've never had a dog escape from the type of harness I use (Ultra Paws One Adjustable Pulling Dog Harness).
