Dude, we went for the hard fast approach and had weeks and weeks of sleepless nights. There is NOTHING worse than the sound of a lonely, confused little puppy at 3am, trust me!!

We also ended up with weeks of sleepless nights because we didn't set clear boundaries and he went through a stage of being very naughty, so I would strongly urge you to play it safe (and kind) the first few nights.

Thanks to all who have advised or given guidance... certainly gave me a few ideas to look at and think about... conclusions - I have decided to get a comprehansive pet plan from my local vet ensuring the wee guy gets all his jabs, worming, chipped, 6 monthly health checks etc etc etc.
Also decided to invest in a crate, in the short term this will be used to help with toilet training the dog at night time, as well as provide wee fudge with somewhere safe to chill out if the kids get too excited (his own safe space)
Puppy classes booked to commence at 12 weeks, to get him socialised with other dogs and basic obedience...

Oh and of course we have unlimited love and attention to give the little fella...

I agree with Whippetwatch. Definitely use a crate from night one but keep within the sound of your voice. We have had all our pups through the years in a crate and in our room when they first arrive. We move them away as we progress farther and farther until they are where we want them. This has increased their bond and reassured the pups who find themselves in a new environment. It really doesn’t take long, from a few nights to a week or so max. Worth the effort.

Unless my mathematics is way wrong, it has been a long time since your last post #23 on Jul 8, 2009 - so did you ever actually bring that little fella home?
