    Rottie registrations falling

I've tried finding the link again but failed! Registrations of rotties have fallen quite drastically since the ban on docking. They have fallen from being up in the 'top ten' of registered breeds to 28th!
I'm not suprised and think it may be for the best but wondered how rottie owners feel in general and wether their dogs having a tail makes that much of a difference to them personally. Will you be sticking with rotties or changing breeds?

I wouldn't make one iota of difference to me. I mean if you truly love a breed of dog, wouldn't you love them just the same with or without a tail?

I'm glad tbh, anyone who drops a breed like this because of a tail is questionable, with gundogs I feel it's different as there is a high risk of them being hurt in the field.

Also I think the bad press of late has more to do with the drop than tails. If it was tails alone ALL docked breeds would have had the same fall.

According to the latest BRS... 07 registered 4,257 to 08 yearly registration.. 2,631.. that can only be a good thing, I think.

    07..

    1st qtr 2nd qtr 3rd qtr 4th qtr

    1,214 / 1.193 / 963 / 887

    08
    1st qtr 2nd qtr 3rd qtr 4th qtr

    704 / 720 / 611 / 596

I think for the breed it can only be a good thing, whether they equate to docking or other issues I dont know, but interesting all the same.

Of-cause that only relates to registered dogs... the others who knows??

thats if your theory is correct, when you consider in the same time span since docking was banned, rotties have also got a bad press as 'devil dogs'.
this may also be a reason for their drop in popularity?

Could be nothing to do with either the demand or the bad press it could be that breeders have reduced their breeding, that could be because of the tail I suppose but think it unlikely to be because of a bad press.

May be breeders think/thought that there would be no buyers for tailed dogs or perhaps they think that they would not wish to show a tailed dog so will not be breeding because they do not need a puppy for themselves.

I think its a good thing,

I do wonder what breed {with a tail} these fairweather rottie people will have,

to me if you love the breed, a tail will not stop you,
it may do the breed the world of good in the long run, getting rid of the wana hard looking dog fools.

I think its a mixture of all, the recent bad press, tails, breeders not breeding as many,

I for one will be sticking with the breed

poss the tv time these past incidents have had could be something to do with it, lets face it, its not just the tabloids now its the 24hr news,

I noticed when the baby was killed in wales recently, it got a lot of air time on the news.

It wouldn't make a jot of difference what anyone decided to do with the Chihuahua's physical appearance. I adore the breed. End of story. The physical appearance is only one part any fantastic breed. I love Chis for their big character and their scatty manner, as well as they are very intelligent and 'tuned in' to their Owner. Surely a Rottie lover wouldn't be put off by a "tail":? They are still big, cuddly bears (well, when they are not being devil dogs that is - sorry couldn't resist:lol: ).

I honestly don't think the downfall is due to bad press. The press have been slamming Rotties for years, haven't they:001:

I do think the attention of has switched more onto rotties lately from being big on staffies previously and before that it was GSDs. Yes they have always had this poor image but these breeds seem to switch about in 'getting the limelight' so to speak before it swaps over again (does that make any sense?). Just seems the rottie based stories are of most interest to the GP this last year especially and blown up all over and at the moment the rottie seems to be number 1 bad boy unfortunately, seemingly on par with pits, followed closely by the staffy. :( GSDs, dobes, boxers e.t.c seem to be having a bit of a reprieve at the mo. My girl Eve is 6 years old and I waited 2.5 years for her, I wanted her tail left on and her front dews and my breeder wanted me committed

I love her tail to bits and so does she

As for the bad rep that we have had for years, it seems to die down periodically until some twit makes a serious error of judgement and uses them in a tv prog as an aggressive dog (Witless Silence eg) or when something tragic happens, which when analysed is never the dogs' fault

I told you all the number of traditionally docked breeds would fall two years ago did'nt I.
Some said it would return back to the levels before the docking act was enacted when owners got used to the idea, I think not.

You all know what I think of the docking ban, .. just a reminder for those who may have forgotten what my views are.

They've ruined Rotties, and Dobes, and Boxers :x

Thank you Scottish Parliament, .. thank you RSPCA, and thanks to the KC for supporting us, .. also all the numpties who've never owned a dog of any description for campaigning and getting a bill through that all right-thinking owners of traditionally docked breeds were appalled at.

It's all irrelevant anyways, I'm in my sixties now and the dogs I have at the moment will probably be my last ones.

Herr Louis Dobermann must be turning in his grave.

My dearest wish is that the KC will be disbanded, not because of the docking ban but because they've ruined many breeds as you all know after the scandal last year, IMO we now have a nation of deformed dogs thanks to KC judges.

Hi, not trying to stir up trouble or anything  but why does the docking ban ruin traditionaly docked breeds? I think the Rotties, Boxers, Dobes etc. with tails are just as gorgeous as those without tails. The only thing I can think is that maybe the undocked ones are knocking people's brews off the coffee table?!:)

Seriously though - they are the same lovely dogs aren't they?!

Fancy not having a dog because it has now been decided not to cut/band it off, how immature!

As for Herr whatsiname, he was prob the idiot who decided to cut em off in the first place so I hope he is giddy with turning:evil:

How a dog can be ruined because it now has a tail is beyond me, oh yea, better tell all the dogs that never had their tails docked that they are ruined

I too feel strongly about docking Nero ;-)

Although I have not had a litter for a few years now my latest boy has his tail and i love to see his waving flagpole. Those who have reared a litter say the same thing the pups are more forward they toddle earlier, thinking about it logically they must use their tail to balance.

I did not know how I would feel about tails after nearly 30 years but one look in a whelping box with all those tail waggers I was totally hooked.

we had a litter, say litter there was only 1 puppy, before the docking ban was introduced & we left his tail on. he was more settled & contented in the whelping box. i love the tails & iff the ban was reversed then the tails would still stay on
