Regardless of the ins and outs and reasons for actions, it really depresses me how to read how many homes some dogs on these threads seem to be passed between. It appears that some poor dogs barely have a chance to get used to their new owners before they are moved on - again. That isn't right at all.

A study was carried out with 48 Labrador Retrievers from 8 weeks old untill death. The puppies were paired within their litters according to sex and body weight, and randomly put into either the control or the lean fed groups.

The control group were allowed to eat what they wanted for 15 minnits a day. The lean fed group were fed 25% less than their litter mate in the control group. The same diet was used for all the dogs; just the amount fed was different.

The study showed that the lean fed group lived on average 1.8 years longer, and were consistently healthier than their littermates.

The study lead to the conclusion that maintaining ideal body weight does the following:

Promotes a longer and healthier life
Reduces potential for developing chronic diseases such as arthritis, diabetes and heart diseases (just to mention a few)
Reduces risk during surgery (if needed)
Helps maintain healthy blood surgar levels
Helps maintain healthy blood pressure and heart rate
The elements of an ideal body weight:

The outline of the dogs ribs can be felt or seen
The dogs waist is visible when viewed from above
The abdomen is tucked when viewed form the side

The results of this study were originally published in JAVMA May 1st 2002 (vol 220, No 9).

The dogs in this study were fed a carefully controlled diet that was fortified with important antioxidants, such as Vitamin A and Vitamin E. Blood levels of these were measured yearly as biological markers of ageing.

I'm not passing comment on Merlin's appearance but feel it important to note that a lean dog also has to have excellent nutrition and not just be starved.

Thing is as I said before I dont believe for 1 second Sc or JKs dog get the diet or care they need. Feeding that many dogs individually would be hard going and walking them everyday and everyone knows SC just flings dry food at them.

For once Jem I'm gonna have to disagree with you sweetie, we both know this bloke and we both know that anything that comes out of his mouth would likely be a loada crap.

Assuming we are talking about the same bloke I am shocked to hear Merlin came back in a state (well assuming we are talking physically anyway).

    I completely agree Luckystar.
