Sounds like my kind of rottie Do you know it the police are using rotties in any significant numbers? Having now heard it from a number of posters, I understand that the approach to training a rot has to be different from that of training a gsd. I would be interested to know how it is different. Is it a matter of rots getting bored more quickly? Being more stubborn? Being calmer/not as hyper in their approach to things? I have seen training a rot described as training a dominant male gsd, requiring more patience, perserverance and a firmer/more dominant approach. Is that accurate?
Im not sure I would describe it that way, I have always found my lot more than willing to learn, happy to please, though all dogs will differ, I have had four male rotties here and I cant say, any one of them needed a more dominant approach than my gsd if anything I have found the opposite to be true, ETA: In the past I have found that some gsd's can be sooooo hyped up that training can be challenging, Rotties are also challenging but in a diff way, you have to find the right buttons on each dog, but when you do.... wahey... your off.
Also, I don't know where about in the UK you are but Kurt I believe is a champ show judge and has judged breed shows in rotts too so would be worth contacting. http://vpg-uk.tripod.com/ Also this one: http://www.brsdc.co.uk/ Best of luck.
I used to work for the lady who bred them - they were super dogs. Having seven of them on top of me really made me fall in love with the breed! Wasn't a Thirtleby the first rottie obedience champion or something? I don't know anything about obedience as you can probably tell!
Kurt is the man to talk to at Bolton Schutzhund Club, This is his updated site http://eylauer-hof.tripod.com/
Sorry, no idea Shona. It was the only working rottie police dog there that day. I have a feeling it was with Lancashire Police, but can't be sure ... my memory isn't what it was
No, as far as I am aware, there are not many Rottie police dogs. Most are still GSDs (yay! ) and Belgian Malinois are also becoming more popular.
Thank you. I stumbled across references to his dogs on another forum, and they are highly regarded as working rotts. I may well give him a call when I know what I want - my heart is definitely with the gsd, but I am considering all possibilities at the moment. The good thing is I have plenty of time to consider what I want, given that I will not be adding another dog for at least another year.
Also might be worth having a word with Norma and Chris Window, Hanbar Kennels. I have a Ter Waele bitch who's lines have amongst others Kaisersteinbruch, and Teufelsbrucke, she has a high prey drive
There was a 'fear factor' on the TV a few weeks agne of the challenges was to run 300ft while being persued and held by a rottie....VERY impressive
Hi, question to Shona please?? do you know anywhere in the central belt that does any outdoor obedience training for rotties..just got a 3 year old male rescue and he has had no training whatsoever...would rather be outside than stuck in a hall with loads of other dogs??
There are a few trainers in the central belt doing training, I dont have my hall at the moment so Im only able to do one on ones outdoors, I will pm you details later today of trainers in the area. ;-)
just realised, your a new member, I think you have to make 20 posts before I can pm you, so you need to get posting
I was going to advise you to go to Kurt, but I got beaten to it I have seen Kurt's dog's being 'worked' and I tell you it was absolutely fascinating, I learnt so much that day and everyone was really really nice and v helpful. When you see the dogs doing bite work it is really interesting esp when it is explained to you and you can see it happening if you know what I mean?;-)
