In one to two years we would like to add another dog to our family. This would be a girl puppy to ensure Cox and her get along. She would be a family pet and companion, and I would train her up for working trials, same as Cox. Up til now I was set of getting another gsd, and very likely will. However, I am also drawn to the rottie. Although I know where to look and what lines to look at to find a well-balanced, but driven gsd, I don't have a clue when it comes to rottie lines. So, if I want a rot with plenty of drive suitable for working trials, what lines do I look at and which breeders should I contact? Thanks for your help on this one!
I have found my Javladare lines to be more sparky than my Armagret lines, though, I do find the bitches to be higher drive than the dogs anyway, I think the thing to think on is.... Rotties dont look like they have as much va va voom when you watch them, but the job still gets done, I have had a gsd that did bite work and a rottie, though the gsd was more to watch, the rottie was harder for whoever was in the bite sleeve to cope with.... if we do meet up on a walk, I will bring a dog and bitch, you can see a vast diff in the way they think, drives and so on.
WHAT???? I am very disappointed in you Skilaki! Why on earth would you choose a Rottie over a GSD? ;-) ;-) ;-) Anyway, I know nothing about Rotties (Shona is the one to talk to), but I do know of a lovely looking, sable working line GSD girlie, perfect for working trials, looking for a new home??? Oh, she is 8 months old.
Varenka have in the past produced some really good obedience dogs, Varenka the bold bomber and Varenka lady be good being just two of them
I might have agreed with you before meeting Shona's gang, but have to say, I'm now smitten with rottis too (though their huge heads take a bit of getting used to after the collies )
XXxxxxxxxxx I have to say I am a Cox fan (usually I prefer the longer coated GSDs but Cox is so so special, stunning, stunning boy xxxxxx ) I think I would be tempted to get another GSD, if she was a girlie version of Cox. However, if it is a Rottie you have your heart set on (lovely dogs also x) then I am sure you will get some brill advice from Shona etc on here xxxx
awe fank oo.... from my lot. You never know Moobli, you may just develope a soft spot for em once you meet vinnie..
Thanks Shona, I'll try to find the websites for both these lines you mention and have a look at their dogs. Do you (or anyone else) know of any rotts doing working trials or schutzhund at all. I remember reading somewhere that there are some german imports with sch qualifications being brought into the country and I would be interested in looking into the offspring of these dogs. Shona, I would love to meet up for a walk to meet you and your doggies - we could talk dogs and dog training all day lol. I would be really interested in learning about their different temprements, drives etc. Send me a pm re when you are free. I am free most mornings on weekdays. At the moment, I am clueless as to rot bloodlines, just trying to find out what is out there, and how much difference there is between bloodlines. LOL, I thought you might have something to say about that. Don't worry though, it is still most likely I will get a gsd girlie, and even if I don't I will always have a gsd by my side . Also I will have a job convincing hubby rots are trustworthy but then I had to convince him gsds were trustworthy so I don't think there will be too much resistance - he wanted a labrador when we first started talking about dogs lol. Wearing my sensible hat on now - much as you are tempting me with the girlie looking for a home, I need at least a year to develop my relationship with Cox and qualify in a stake or two at working trials before I add another doggie member to the family. Thanks werewolf, Cox agrees with you that he is special and stunning . It is most likely I will get a girlie version of Cox, but just exploring the possibility of a rot as they have always been in the back of my mind as a possible dog for me.
Marius' GGP is Ch Varenka Secret Agent. He certainly has more working drive than my previous two Rotts. He is way more rounded and steadier too
I found that comment interesting as I found a video once that showed footage of bitework. Out of all the dogs tested it was the Rott that had the hardest pound-for-pound bite. I assumed it would be a Pit-Bull, but the Rott whooped it in the test (I hasten to add, they were all tested on a sleeve)
the diff in pressure is amazing, rotties have so much strength in there jaw. Im sure the vid your talking about is bite force, think its on youtube My gsd,. looked very much the part on the bite sleeve, they are quite vocal to though, the rotties just run out and latch on.... but the reaction of whoever is in the sleeve tells the story lol
Ruth Hill (Juffther) has a lovely German import, he has passed his Shutzhund 1 and is a lovely dog. Ruth is lovely and friendly, if you give her a call she'd be happy to chat dogs. http://www.juffther.co.uk/pages.php?page_ID=13
Oh don't get me wrong Shona, I really do like Rotties, but doubt I would ever own one - I will just admire other people's dogs I can't wait to meet Vinnie. I remember seeing an absolutely magnificent example when I was watching the police dog trials at Manchester a few years ago. It was a very, very impressive dog indeed. Really lean and athletic.
I am just pulling your leg ... sort of ;-) Totally understand about not wanting to add to the doggie family just yet ... if you know of anyone interested in the young bitch, I can send you the details?
