Natural short tail/bobtail Border collie? Questions

ooh, I'd love to see some photos

Wonder if there is any chance my girl is related..though I guess we'd never be able to find out.

I know one of her sisters went to england somewhere,,, her name was cassie,, she's a blue merle tint of brown,,, not sure how to do pics on ere

I'm in Scotland, but as my girl is a rescue, she could've come from anywhere - we have no background of her at all. All we know is that she was thrown over the gate at the rescue centre in the middle of the night and that she was scared stiff of everything, particularly men. She's probably about 5 years old now.

From the first photo it doesn't look like there is any tail? (stumpy has about 3 inches)

friend of time just had two bobs in a litter. One really short Bob (rottie docked short) & one about a third in length.

Also i teach a bob tailed collie, her spine & mouth arent fully formed & her tail is just a tiny stump. Shes lovely though, really sweet & clever!

My border collie was born with no tail.

Very interesting. These are the only photos I have of Freddie (RIP) that show his tail on this computer. He came to us at about 12 months old.

We have no idea whether his tail was natural, docked or an accident.

what would be the average length for a BC tail then? I've always thought Lens was short at just past his hocks ??

Have been following this thread with interest for a long time now. My BC rescue has a bobbed tail - pretty sure she was born that way. I am new at this, but I will try to upload pics.

Difficult to tell from photos, but I think your girl's tail is a wee bit shorter than mine's.

Well, thank you. Her name is Luna von Stumpwaggle, and she is a very sweet girl...until she gets outside! Then she is a little monster.

Anyway, we don't know what her litter mates looked like, but judging by the "feathers" sprouting from the tip her stump, I think the bobtail is just a physical anomaly - no sign of scarring.

We had a litter of Rez mutts that I picked up a couple of summers ago. There were 9 puppies, one had no tail, and 2 had half tails. We were pretty sure they must have had some Aussie in their mix (there's no way these pups were docked, as I first saw them just after they were born, and took them into rescue @ 5 weeks. )

Aussie is the only common type breed that carries the bob-tail gene around here, and rez mutts are a hodgepodge mix of 10 or so breeds, most often.

My friend has a 'bob tailed' JRT. literally a little teeny bump. when she saw the advert she said they were docked but i said 'oh they will be bobtail ones' she asked me if my middles names were 'naive' and 'gullible'. I pointed out that bobtailed boxers ahve been around for ages.

Sure enough the litter were a mix of tails and no tails and most def born like it. She went for her last jab the ther day and her chip and the vet was less than impressed. Although she is the smallest thing ive ever seen apparently she is quite 'vicious' (my friend has had a jrt before and said 'ive never seen anything like it' shes been trying to dig out rats/mice since about 12 weeks old) The vet said the 'bobtail' is a recessive gene and doesnt agree with people breeding for it as it will only result in in breeding and no one knows what other genetic issues it brings and her 'tenacity' could be a result of it (he referred to her being 'hard as nails').

Her predecessor was a fab gun dog and would happily pick up or beat all day. This little one will not be going anywhere near a shoot as my friend says she will def be a 'plucker'!
