Any beagle owners?? Mine has a big aggressive bone in his body! ha some people tell me they have never heard of or seen a beagle that aggressive before... he is very protective and can also be a big baby... but, don't even THINK you are going to bend down and pet him if he doesn't get to smell you first!! anyone else have this??
I have 2 beagles. Most visitors to the house cant get far in the front door without being sniffed first! They seem to spend a lot of their day sleeping, they are both asleep at my feet as I type.
We've got 2. The oldest (16 months is the brains of the outfit and the boss - most of the time). But if the little one manages to get a sock then god help anyone (human or beagle) that tries to get it off him! He's been like this since we got him at 7 weeks. it's hard to imagine how a tiny little ball of fur can be so intimidating He's 6 months old now and we've pretty much cured the problem by always swapping for something better. But we had a VERY tough time finding anything better than a sock!
You own Beanie and Biggles dont you Scarter? I have to say, I follow your website religiously. Beanie is doing really well at her agility! One of mine also has the same body shape that Beanie has, and yet his brother looks totally different.
Yes, Beanie & Biggles are my babies I'm so glad you like their blog She's doing fantastically well in agility in some aspects. She tackled every single bit of equipment like a pro - everything but the weave poles she did at her first attempt and she learnt the weave poles in a week. By two weeks I could recall her though the weaves and by three weeks send her through them! She loves hurtling around an agility course with me at her side. Who says Beagles can't be trained! But.... We moved on from the easy handling and started doing the more complex stuff where the dog is working at a distance. I'm not good at it, beanie got bored with me trying and now she refuses to play agility and goes sniffing the floor instead! It's so frustrating - not to mention embarrassing in classes when everyone is waiting for their turn while you try to entice your naughty beagle away from sniffing the floor at the other end of the arena. But that's life when you own a Beagle We're having a couple of private lessons to get us moving again - our teacher is very good and seems to understand naughty hounds very well ! Tell us more about your beagles.
Ahhh, trying to stop a Beagle sniffing, been there...and failed... many times! Jasper and Nelson just turned 2 and they are litter brothers although we didnt get them at the same time. We got Jasper at 8 weeks but when he got to 6 months thought he needed a playmate as the cats were having none of it. Luckily his litter brother came up for rehoming from the original breeder. She had run him on to be a show dog but one of his teeth had come through crooked so she didnt want to show him. We had to start all over again as Nelson (originally Casanova which was swiftly changed as I really couldnt see myself calling THAT out!) wasnt trained at all. Although, he seemed to pick things very quickly if trained with treats. He also seems more keen to learn new things whereas Jasper would sleep all day and be quite happy with that. I've lost them a couple of times when and they have taken off after a scent. Nelson loves to chase rabbits which is something I am trying to train out of him. I have found though that I can let one off at a time and they dont run off as they are more concerned with where the other is at all times (never mind me!). Nelson is also very much a bayer at other dogs too. If people dont really know Beagles they think he is being aggressive, it's kind of hard to explain that he's only telling me he's found something when he's baying at the top of his lungs and then Jasper chimes in too. Walk times can be very loud at times! I was met by a couple out walking the other day and the woman said that she loved Beagles. Her partner then asked if they were good, my reply was "headstrong" :? which I think best describes a lot of Beagles!
Used to know someone who had a Beagle with aggression problems. She had to keep him muzzled in the house so he wouldn't bite her daughter I would think it's not usual for this breed to be so feisty though. Have you had a trainer out to him on 1 2 1? I would worry about him biting and being pts, especially as Beagles are cute and people will want to touch him.
i have 2 beagles - they are normaly extremly good with people esp children. I would say if the dog is aggressive with other people who it doesnt know it may think its protecting 'his' pack as it were, on the other hand if its towards you or any member of the family i would get a trainer to come round. My two beagles are great but they know that myself and my partner are the bosses and dont do anything naughty when were around!! they are very social dogs and crave company from people normaly xxxx
The OP hasn't been online for over a month, maybe she will look back in soon and see the replies Beagles as a general rule should have a very good natured, reliable temprement that is amiable and alert, showing no aggression or timidity. They are a dog par excellence with people.Mine are the most friendly bunch you could wish to meet. I have met very few that aren't.Having said that there are far more over in the USA than here in the Uk and of course with so many more being bred over there you are bound to come across a wider range of types and temprements. However an agressive nature shouldnt really be apparent in a Beagle. Have you tried working with him on this behaviour ? has he always been like this ? Or is it more recent ? You might find doing some activities such as a training class with him will help him with socializing more and get him out and about mixing with other dogs and people.I always think a stimulated beagle with plenty to do is a very happy beagle. Hi Fenella and Hannah, would love to see some pics of your Beagles,Its seems to be mainly just Scarter and i on here with Beagles, there are loads of pics of ours lol
Hiya tink! go to the pictures page i posted some pics of mine a couple of days ago ' beagles on the mountain' i love mine to bits and dont think id ever by another breed again , where abouts do you live?? x
Hi i am a newbie to the site, but i have two Beagles and also help out when i can for the Beagle Welfare which rehomes abandoned hounds. I was talking to one of the women who said they were getting more aggressive beagles coming through their doors and can only be down to breeding. She also said that they are now keeping records on aggresive dogs as to see if there is a trend with a certain breeders. If anyone is thinking of getting another beagle why not have a quick peak at www.beagleadvice.org They do get puppys coming through there doors for rehoming.
Hi Jimmy and welcome to Dogsey. Your post is interesting...I know in my breed aggression is rare BUT sadly has been knwon, especially with dogs coming into rescue, sometimes from certain breeders. I wonder...for the sake of argument, if the aggression is in the 'lines' or if it is the poor breeders selling to people who don't understand dogs, or the breed that they have bought? Any pics of your two? I love Beagles.
Hiya Ramble, you cant solely put the blame on either party but thre is alot of bad breeders doing bad breeding, solely looking for the profit but in the same instance how many first time beagle owners never look up the breeds characteristics. I just look at the amount of beagles i see who never get off the lead. These happy little hounds are at their best and a joy to watch when off the lead. I would post some pics of my two if i knew how.
Hiya...you need to set up a photobucket or Flickr account...there is a how to guide on here somewhere, I shall have alook....
aha yes it does. If you click on the photo on your Flickr account and go to all sizes for it. Underneath there should be an image link you can copy and paste. If you copy it then click on the symbol on the posting thread that looks like a postcard with a mountain on it, you can copy the link into the window that comes up and bingo. Hope you can follow that!!!!!
