    ello!
Nobody said its the dogs fault, and I dont know how much experience you have personally had with pit Bulls, but I have quite a bit. They are NOT like other dogs, believe me your Springer would be broken in half by a PB, these dogs are so powerful it defies belief. Their issues become even more dangerous when they turn on humans, the damage is horrific, a "snap" by one of these dogs could brake a childs arm. I have boarded plenty and still do, dogs that are that type are still around everywhere, you have to be so careful with them in the kennels, they switch in a flash. We boarded a bitch that flipped a GSD up in the air and onto its back in a split second, it was incredible, and it had lived with this GSD for almost 3yrs. It was purely because the GSD was greeting me and she became jealous, she waited however till she was away from me before she attacked, it took 3 of us to get her off. Fortunately the GSD was not badly hurt, but their owners later told us that they had to rehome a Terrier because she attacked it without warning braking its leg in the process!

You think of a life for a dog where he must be 100% certain he wont come into contact with a child or something that may set him off, how could that be?

I love the breed, but in todays society and given the reason they were bought here, kept and subsequently banned and also given they are still here and so must only be bred for one purpose in mind, I firmly believe they have no place in our homes as pets.

    Totally agree with this statement.

As a banned breed and the type of breeders breeding them, they will not be breeding these dogs with the intention for the pet/show market.

They are bred to fight and to be owned as weapons.

I honestly do see both sides, and the way you feel about pits, I have similar views on staffs. Most of the staffs I meet at work are blimmin horrible always having to come round the back as so aggresive especially the girls. And I have seen numourous dogs in that have been attacked by staffs in a very short time.
The pits I have met I have been lucky as have been adorable.
I guess in a way I do relate it to my Kato as so many people see him and pick up there dogs and give me daggers yet he has done nothing and is a big soft dope. If you see him get through a chicken carcass you do think "poop that jaws powerful"
Jackbox pitbulls are not the only dogs bred for weapons as I fear rotties are heading the same way as pitbulls.
I still feel its not the dogs that need regulating its the idiots that have them.

I appreciate what you are saying, but Staffords are a whole different ball game. PB dont give warning, they dont quit, they dont stop, a Stafford is a normal dog in every sense, bred over many many years for a pet home, the PB took over the fighting game, bigger, stronger, more aggressive, more powerful, no feeling of pain, and so we have what we see today. Id gladly board 100 Staffs to one aggressive PB, genuinely.

If pitbulls get banned everywhere then thats it end of a breed as some idiots ruin it for the genuine lovers of the breed and any breed disappearing is a very sad thing indeed.
I have always believed people with the more powerful dogs should be licensed and checked on because I am certain there will be another breed following the Pits.

That was the whole point of the ban Julia, to eredicate them so more "accidents" cant happen, look what happens when they do!

I hate threads of this nature I really do.

Ok this dog can't help the breed he may or maynot be,why should he have a death sentence. He hasn't harmed anyone yet. This can apply to all dogs.

    Dawn,have you seen two SBT's fight ?
    I have first hand,pitts don't stop neither do SBT's.
I have a bitch who hates some dogs with a passion. She doesn't give any warning apart from a tremor I feel through her lead,no barking,no growling, nothing.
I am pretty sure if she got into a fight she wouldn't stop, not many SBT's would.
They have always as a breed been reliable around children, this does not guarentee that they will be reliable around other dogs, because many are not.

Only the OP can decide what to do,What would I do? I honestly do not know.
But one thing is for sure why should a dog die for been a certain breed.

Yes I have seen Staffs fight, but the main difference as far as Im concerned is the size, weight and power of the PB is massive in comparison.

But my making Pitbulls illegal hasnt really worked as they are still being bred and owned and used for fighting by idiots so in my opinion wouldnt it of been easier to sort the problem at the root of it and thats the idiots that were allowed to own them.
And if the pitbull was say wiped out I dont think the idiots would say "ok I will find another hobby" they will move on to another breed that is legal to own like rotts ot staffs and keep going till they get banned and so on.

Because it is the law and presumably that law was put in place to protect other dogs and children. I appreciate what you are saying though, any fit animal put to sleep is one too many. However, we have to abide by the law surely:001:

There are laws that are ridiculous though, the law should never of been passed in the 1st place IMO I believe anyone owning a powerful dog should have a license and the owner should be made to take 100 % responsibility in my eyes.
    Banning pitbulls clearly hasnt worked.

I totally agree that it hasn't worked totally but there would be many more Pitts out there if the law wasn't passed.

The license idea would be fantastic, in an ideal world but this Country is far from ideal. We have enough problems getting at-risk children taken care of, so what chance do we have of a licensing procedure being policed?:002:

Responsible dog ownership means NOT owning dogs like Pit Bulls, you are breaking the law how ever you dress it up. I dont care if the dog is healthy and hasnt bitten anyone its illegal, period. Im not saying I agree with the law but it is there and it should be adhered to.

Julia, there are already laws to the effect you mention, they cover ALL dogs, i.e the dangerous dog act, by removing the PB, the idea was to cut out the attacks, but the attacks are ongoing because they are still being bred and owned by morons who think its cool. A lisence wont do a jot, if a dog bites its more often than not in a home, what good would that lisence do then? If the breed is eradicated, it cant bite can it? Responsibility after the event is pointless and futile.

Attacks and bites have not decreased though have they, how this Bull *** law can protect the public is beyond me.
And the majority are not from one breed, bites are from all breeds and crossbreeds.
Maybe eradicating all breeds would be the answer because they all bite.
They are assuming because a dog is a certain breed it's dangerous which is complete nonsense.
In the run up to the DDA been brought in pitts were not the only breed to have attacked were they ?

I believe that dog attacks will continue, lessons are not learn't,mistakes are made time and time again, legislation unless it makes owners of ALL breeds responsible for their dogs actions is pointless.

No attacks by PB are still ongoing because people are still breeding and owning them. Regardless of how many bites are being recorded, the severity of a PB attack is far more serious than that of a Yorkie or Collie type.

They bring in a ban, people moan, they continue breeding them, kids get killed, they moan the act hasnt worked, they round up all the ones they can find, people moan dogs are being killed!! No win situation, but as far as the LAW is concerned, the PB is banned!

    I agree with you,
The act hasn't worked because the damn thing is unenforceable.
Who's responsible for enforcing it ?
Experts continue to argue over what is or isn't a pitt so what chance do we ever have of enforcing the law ?

Will we see an end to the Pitt in the UK,that's what the numpties in government thought, how wrong they were.

Ofcause all dogs can attack given the circumstances,,

But there is one huge difference as far as I am aware... between other breeds and pits.. and that is in the purpose of why they are bred.

Through generations of selective breeding , aggression will have actively been bred out of other breeds... or at least by those who know what they are doing.

The pit bull... is bred for aggression... there is no other reason for these dogs to be bred... they are bred to fight... they come into the country illegally from abroad( Holland I think??) through Ireland .. and filter over here.... they are bred for 100% fighting ability.. they will breed from the best fighting dogs.... and these are the dogs you wish to see let loose into family homes...

Sure we see dog attacks on a daily basis, by many breeds.. labs being on of the most common... but they have not been bred for pure aggression..bad breding yes, but not for fighting ability.

Don't forget the pit has to be people friendly for the sole purpose of the handler in the ring..(wouldn't do for it to bit the hand that feeds it would it)..but they are bred to be100% dog aggressive and sadly with the life they lead many end up human aggressive as well....we only have to look to the cases we see in the news.

And if the only way to deal with the morons who breed these dogs is to remove and euthanize them..so be it.

Will it stop them probably not, but you cant allow the illegal breeding of a breed to carry on , because of that..you deal with what you have got when you have got it..

If aggression was bred in then aggression can be bred out.
They are a beautiful looking dogs and I would hate to see the end of them.

Looks arent enough though, look at the NI and what has happened to that just because of people wanting a pet that looked like a wild animal!

There wont be an end to them, but they shouldnt be here as it is the law, they will continue in many other countries. I wish folk would see that the reasons they are still bred are the wrong ones and it would be better anyway for them to be out of what is destined for them. I do think Julia if you had been around the Pit Bull and seen just how they can change and react, you may feel differently.
