Out of interest, how many NIDs have you seen in the 'fur' and have the def been NIDs?

    I voted yes,
Personally I think I can see mal in there, and from what Ive read NI were orignally a mix of Husky, GSD and Mal etc.

I can only go on what I have read, and also what I personally see in the dog..Im no expert by know means!

Why doesn't someone have the DNA test that can be done to see what on earth is in their dog - would be very interesting :)

Probably 30-40, about half NIs and half Utonagans (according to the owners).
Not a huge number, but my impression has only been confirmed by the dogs I have seen on forums like Dogsey and on NI/Ute websites.

    Hi Mick
Would you say in all that time you have never seen one that you could say was a good looking dog?

Yes, definitely. I've seen a couple that have been very handsome dogs. They still looked like husky/GSD crosses, but seemed to look balanced and had inherited the best of both worlds, rather than the worst. Unfortunately, they seem to be the odd ones out.

I think the worst sight I saw was an NI owner with six at a fundraising event we were doing. He was trying to convince me that they were well behave dogs with no issues......whilst they were wearing electric shock collars!!!! I told him politely to stop talking to me!

What does amaze me is that people that own NI's make a bee line for us at events and when walking our dogs and try and convince us how similar they are to Sibes.....why not just buy a Sibe?!?!?

The thing is Mick, I think what people have to remember is, your chosen breed is the Husky, of course to you it is the 'bees knees', some of us feel like that about our chosen breed. As you have said there are badly bred Huskys, there are badly bred NIDs. There are badly bred dogs in every breed. Then of course you get the fact that all breeds are different and that we all have our own idea on what is good looking and what isn't. Just the other day there was a thread on here about a dog, US breed I believe it was the Fox hound? Some people thought it was nice in its make up/build, others didn't. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

    I never make a beeline, if I wanted a Sibe, I would've gotten a Sibe.

I completely accept that and it is a great part of the reason why to me (used to Sibes) NIs etc just look "wrong." To my (biassed) eye, they just look really unbalanced.

Personally I do think there is a bit of Mal in them. One thing that convinces me is not their looks, but thier temperament. As you know, we recently got a rescue cross GSD and Mal, called Malli :) She has almost the exact same temperament as Kopek, and her mannerisms are the same. Although she is a little quieter, but then she's a year older than him.

She does run and carry herself differently, and to be honest looks nothing like any NI I've ever seen, but all the same it's not just in the looks.

I think stating just because they don't look like a Mal means they can't have any in them is a little short sighted. We all know how quickly breeders can change the looks of any dog breed.
