Wikipedia. The source of all knowledge! You should look sometimes. Its amazing what you can find. However like most of the opinions of some people on here, a lot of the 'facts' on there are merely opinion.

I have a NI x Utonagan and a Northern Inuit. Luca, the NI cross is 6 and Nushka is 5 months old. Neither dogs have shown any health problems to date although there has been talk of Luca having Von Willibrands disease in her Utonagon line. As she's spayed, there's no risk of this being passed on from her.

Moulting- They tend to moult twice a year although this can increase with central heating. Providing that you use a good grooming comb (furminator/rake) this should help somewhat.

With people- Luca can be vocal with strangers and slightly aloof. After a few minutes, she fine but tends to ignore. Nushka is a typical puppy and loves everyone.

Other dogs- Luca is reasonably sociable but will stand her ground towards any aggressive dogs. Other than a couple of squabbles with my GSD's, she takes most dogs in her stride. She's not aggressive towards other dogs. Nushka again is a puppy and every dog is her friend

Destruction- Luca has been destructive due to separation anxiety and Nushka has chewed a few things, but again, she's a puppy and teething.

Seperation Anxiety- Luca does suffer from this and it's human company she craves, not canine. She has got better over the years but we still have bouts of it now and again. Nushka is the opposite and doesn't mind being left but she does have the company of the others.

Exercise- NI's do require a lot of exercise. If you're looking for a dog that will be happy with a quick trip to the park then the NI isn't for you. Saying that though, if I've been unwell, they've been quite happy with a short walk. It's the quality of your walk rather than quantity ;-)

Prey drive- This can prove a problem as a lot of NI's do have this and my Luca is no exception to that. Providing you work hard with them from an early age you can overcome this but I wouldn't advise letting them off near livestock. That would go for any breed of dog. I do work my older three in our field but the recall is good and they do come back when called.

Training- NI's do require a lot of training as they're intelligent dogs and quick to learn. This can prove a problem if you have a dog that isn't food or toy orientated, but it's not impossible. My advise would be to enroll your puppy into a good training class.

Health- Both my girls are healthy and have shown no sign of illness to date. Luca does have VWD in her Utonagan side but she hasn't shown symptoms yet. She's spayed so there's no chance of it being passed down. Nushka is perfectly health to date with no signs of illness or aggression.

There is a lot of controversy over this breed with regards to health and pedigrees. It is up to you who and what you wish to believe. I do however advise you to make sure both prospective parents are health checked (make sure you ask to see the certificates) and check pedigrees the best you can.

Please don't be put off by all the negativity around this breed, not everyone is the same. I don't regret getting my girls and one day hope to hear the patter of tiny paws  (ALL health checks permitting)

They did split a number of years ago from the NI's (from what I can gather) I don't know whether it's from the NI lines or from a dog that was used by the founder of the Utonagan.

This is one of the very reason's why I intend on having Nushka tested for this. I can't and won't take the risk of not having it done.

Luca's father did not come from NI lines, he was bred by Eddy Harrison, and to the best of my knowledge he never showed signs of VWD and neither has any of his offspring. I also owned his Great Aunt, also bred by Eddy, and she never showed signs of it either. Unfortunately both dogs are now deceased, so unable to have the tests that would prove they weren't carrying it, convenient to blame them isn't it:? :?

I was told in a PM that it was Wolfie. I can't for the life of me remember who sent it but that's who I was told her grand sire was and that he was a carrier of VWD.

I'd like nothing more in the world to be told it's untrue and my girl isn't at risk

It's down to breeders to make sure mistakes aren't repeated and that all health tests are carried out before mating ;-)

Contrary to popular belief not all breeders are in it for the money and as a future breeder, I CERTAINLY won't be. My dogs health comes way before anything else.
