Lovely girls xxxxx Ref coats, I like heavy and short in both breeds , I don't really have a preference and would be sad to see the heavy coat in NIDs disapear, (not that I think it will) :-( xxxx
The longer coats are called rough coats, and then the shorter ones are actually called double coats, because they have an undercoat, something you can clearly see on Maelona. There were many reasons for the split, one of them being that the Utonagan (as they became) had a different vision, there are after all 32 different sub species of wolf
one of the reasons I never got into the NI's was because even whilst I was looking at them in the very early days when Tawney was still alive and I was looking for a pup after Eddy died, I was told that they were breeding the long coats out, something which immediately put me off. Also when I saw piccies of the NI's they looked nothing like Tawney or the dogs I had seen at Eddy's. When I saw the dogs owned by the breeder of my dogs and other Utonagans, they looked like the dogs I had first seen, and my girls' great grandma reminded me a lot of Tawney in her ways, I can put a piccie of her up if you would all like, she is 11 years old now and was not bred by Eddy but is from Eddy's original stock
Cariad is my idea of a Ute, without wishing to sound rude and I dont mean anything by it, but the other looks like a poor quality Bi coloured GSD.
Aww Dawn, I think if you saw Lona in the flesh you would change your mind, She is a Stunning girl and looks nothing like a shepherd. I do think that some pics do not do the dogs justice. :-(
Must admit I thought that too. Sorry Tassle :-( it's the 2nd pic (I think) that we are looking at :? There is more dif between NI and Ute than just the coat :?
Ah Karen thank you, I have to say that she is the ugly duckling that turned into a swan, she looked a bit like a labx before her ears went up, then they were like twice the size of her head, so she still looked strange, but she has grown into them now and is very graceful nowadays here they are at 5 months here is Tawney aged 10 years
Please dont take it to heart I dont mean anything by it, just saying what I see. Im sure she is lovely (well I know she is) but in comparison to Cariad its like two different breeds. http://www.eastgermanshepherdpups.com/Bailey.html
yes it is amazing they are litter siblings isn't it I couldn't believe it when I first saw her. She has a couple of cousins that are the same colour, and her grandad on her maternal side has Cariad's coat but Maelona's colouring. He is nearly 9 now I think, and goes running with his 'Dad' every day. Ha ha ha, Bailey has Maelona's donkey ears
Don;t be sorry - As far an I know she doesn;t - but she is only 3 1/2. She was 6 or 8 months in the picture - I think you will find it was her puppy sit .
As I understand it, both Utes and NIs were the same breed. It was human politics which split the breed, not the dogs. However, from the pictures shown on this thread, my impression is that the Utonagan has veered more toward the GSD part of its ancestry and the NI towards the Siberian Husky part of its ancestry. Some of the Utes shown here look like the old fashioned Alsatians I remember from my childhood in the '50's. The NI's still (to me - sorry) just look like very poor quality sibes. What would people say these were? Mick
