    NI/Ute Health Problems DISCUSSION thread.

I have created this thread as a space for DISCUSSION of the above topic in order to keep such discussion/debate away from the original thread in which the OP clearly stated that she was after INFORMATION and FACTS ONLY - NOT argument.

Please keep the other thread informative and discuss any issues arising from it here. Can we at least (and AT LAST) have ONE NI thread that is kept on-topic and keep the arguments AWAY?

Hi Sally, what a good idea!!

I would like to ask, in previous threads there have been many allegations of Addisons Diease and VWD in the NI, However, I note that to date no one has come forward and said that they have a dog diagnosed with either of these conditions.

Does anyone actually know a NI that has been diagnosed with either of these diseases?

Could anyone have the answers to the recent deaths of puppies?

I would say at this point NO, I have looked at the web sites involved with these pups, tbh they are very vague about these pups, so sadly I would say NO

I know personally of 2 NIS registered dogs that died / pts other than the ones mentioned on here. 1 was unknown cause as no pm was done at 2 years old, the other the owner has asked me to remove as it`s a legal matter. There have been half a dozen or so other young dogs that have died from diagnosed Addisons... from the same litter / line. This litter was born April 2003 and died April 2004. Another litter same line born June 2003 and died January 2006.

Personally, I would say that until the persons concerned are in receipt of the full facts, then their loss should be respected and people should stop speculating on what the possible causes could have been.

I wonder if people can start naming the lines they know in situations such as this?? I know people don't like to / or don't feel it's their place to name lines or breeders on public forums but it would help.

Much as I don't agree with finger-pointing/judging strangers - I would have to agree with this. As an NI owner, of course any issues with lines would be good to know (in case your dog is in one).

It is of course worrying when several people mention different diseases that a LOT of NI are dying from, but not hearing from people directly involved (mainly from non-owners, or people anti-NI). I mentioned I will be testing Kia and Lupi against what I can think of, but really I want to find these 'LOTS/majority' of dogs dying from the diseases mentioned. Addisons, epilepsy, blood clotting disorders, suffering from HD, etc, etc.

I mean how likely are my dogs to have any of these things? Several people imply it is a given they will have something - again not necessarily owners, but many people.

If the pups were living with there new familys then would be different BUT they were still with breeders and were being sold as a commodity so breeders have a responsibility to explain autopsy results if they had them.

They can't explain what they haven't yet received, so until they do, it would be respectful to allow them to grieve and other people to stop speculating.

Hi I take it by your post they have had a PM done? and are awaiting results?
given this pup died on the 1st of August, It would seem that the PM results are taking some time to come back,

Has anyone else had a PM done? If so how long did it take to get rusults back?

Yep they must be done quickly due to tissue breakdown etc, blood clots too (unless they have a clotting disorder) so blood tests are also done quickly. When I had my cat done, they said within 24hrs was best. Barring the obvious reasons, tissue samples etc. would need to be taken if cause of death was not immediately seen, so time was an optimum. I had results the same day.

Its very obvious the NI has serious health issues, I remain astounded that they are swept under the carpet and kept out of sight, completely gobsmacks me.

When you read about a bitch producing a puppy with cataracts, and rightly so she wont be bred from again, it saddens me to learn that the breeder of this bitch and owner of her litter sister KNEW about it, did NOT have her own bitches eyes tested, and then bred from that bitch! I can find nothing that says the sire has been tested, nor the dam either. P**s poor excuses for breeders in my opinion.

Eye tests are so cheap too, whats the problem with doing them?

I feel sometimes the problem with money minded breeders are not doing the test, but the the results the tests give, eg, its easyer to play the " Oh I had no idea" or "The bitch SEEMS fine"
so much more difficult if the bitch has been tested and the results show a problem

I often feel this is why many rotty breeders dont do elbows,
