Dont think there is any need for this post at all and as a Moderator should know better! We are all happliy discussing out dogs regardless of breed and this post seems very negative . . . Maybe its you thats reading to much into a harmless post based on my observations. People don't know Ela is an NI she is just a large wolfy looking dog. I wanted a shorter title for the thread thats all.
We??? You're the one equating the words NI and plague, and making it a breed thing. :? "We" just read what "you" post So if you knew all along you were getting avoided as you have wolfy looking dogs, then I have 2 questions: 1) What was the point of your original post moaning about N.I. prejudice, when you knew all along it wasnt??? 2) If you get a wolfy looking dog as you like the wolfy look...which is great, i think exactly the same way...then why moan when you get wolfy based response from the General Public?? The more one thinks about it, the less any of it makes any sort of sense, apart from wallowing in a victim complex.
Given all the "grief" you appear to have had in the VERY short time you have owned this type of Dog, Im surprised the breeder didnt warn you of all these problems associated with owning one. Wolfy looking? Nope, certainly not. Bouncey, NORMAL Dog yes, but that goes for most dogs who's owners "assume" they have something they dont, they see things that arent there! Id suggest you steered well clear of other dog walkers as to they me they clearly appear to be taking their Dogs welfare (and perhaps yours, ever thought of that?) seriously.
why are you picking on her? and the suggestion she does'nt take her dogs welfare seriously is terrible. there was no need for that post. i get the same problem with xero, mothers gathering up children even though my 5 yr old daughter is walking with me. i also get lots of people avoiding me and xero and crossing the road whether they have dogs or not. just because ela is still a pup does'nt mean people will not be frightened of her. people started avoiding me and xero when she was 6 months old and she is an extremely friendly and well behaved dog, she has never ran up to strangers and other dogs yet there are still people that are frightened of her. i can see what razcox is saying because it gets my back up when people assume she's not friendly. i never have this problem with my lab however, my friend wishes people would stay away from her white gsd as she is a rescue dog with alot of issues but even when she is barking and growling people still want to stroke her because she is white. i'd love people to ask if xero was friendly instead of having the cold shoulder
Oh dear you havent read the post properly! I never said SHE wasnt taking her dogs welfare seriously did I? I said OTHER people were taking THEIR dogs welfare seriously and perhaps hers, in as much as if they had an aggressive dog, avoiding her would be in the best interest of HER Dog!
I'm with Dawn on this. I try very hard to keep Loki away from other dogs because he loves to brawl as much as they seem to want to attack him. In the end it's best to keep him on a lead, stomp into the undergrowth and let the nice dogs pass by. (Although they will go for him, given half the chance - and these days he welcomes it. ) I laugh but it isn't funny at the time. I have fabulous muscles from holding onto Loki's lead. :-(
i understood that wrong, but telling her she's acting like a victim is out of order, she's making an observation. am i acting like a victim when i complain that people avoid xero? i actually don't know why i bother because it all seems like school girl bickering to me, someone always trying to get one over on someone else. i'm a very laid back person but this really gets my back up
Not a problem. To be fair, if you read her posts she does come across as a victim, people just get fed up of it thats all, if Im wrong then I apologise.
I think what most folks should be aware of is .... that if you have a large dog, especially one with erect pointy ears this is not an unusual response to receive from some folks, friendly or not .... get used to it!
Eh? Not sure what you mean? I'll try to clarify. My dog hates other dogs so I keep him on a lead where I know there will be other dogs. I feel this is responsible because it avoids fights. But other dogs still want to have a pop at him, even when he is on a lead. This annoys me because the owners can clearly see he is not happy with their attention and neither am I. I am also not happy when other owners allow their dogs to approach mine because I know it will end in a fight. BTW - he was fully socialised etc. As a mum I would prefer other mums to keep their dogs under control around my child - and I will keep her under control around them - good deal, huh? While she is intrusive in the extreme with Loki - UNDER SUPERVISION - and he is great with her - UNDER SUPERVISION - I do not know or trust any other dog with her completely because I do not know them. So I would prefer other owners don't let their dogs jump alll over her - just as I don't let my dog jump all over other people and their kids.
sorry i did'nt mean you, sorry if you thought i did. i was talking about when xero is on a lead that mums run away. xero never runs up to strangers or other dogs and never has as i've taught her not to. if kids come over and play she is fantastic with them and is with my daughter, under supervision like you said
wow, how to turn a random thread into nit picking huh! I could think of more serious matters to comment on as to if someone is playing a 'victim'? Surely the thread was meant as just a bit of a light hearted topic? Jeez. Someone said earlier - big dogs with upright ears - I believe that's the truth - If the dog is kinda big and lumbering / slower paced with down turned ears people react different. I would say 85% of people seem very cautious at the sight of my dogs. Takoda is a big lad compared to anything that isn't leo or newfie size. What it is with my dogs I think puts people off is there speed and how alert they look when playing - The only dogs that are allowed to actually interact with mine belong to a lady with a couple Leo's a newfie a lab etc - anything smaller and people do make a bee line away from us...But victim? no!
P.S: when I first joined there could have been similar posts about staffies [and people's reactions to them] or whatever and these type of threads would just be let to be what they are...Maybe the op would have been better off to leave the breed name out of the title - her bad! but I just don't get why people are so eager to nit pick - people that wouldn't really even be interested in the thread other than to add comments about chips on shoulders and the woe is me attitude of NI owners - to much generalisation! The nit picking back and forth is just so irritating on the more serious threads - fine, I guess - but c'mon now!
A random thread..? Have a look through the section.. If I started a thread one day complaining that people were pointing at my dog and calling it odd names like Wolf dog/Snow dog , then just a few days later started another thread saying people were avoiding me and turning away, ..if I complained about people pulling my breed to pieces then posted quotes from elsewhere that were almost guaranteed to start yet another negative discussion about my breed I wouldn't be surprised at people starting to notice and comment on my actions.
Sorry I haven't been following the op's other threads...If the threads you talk about arn't the op's then maybe it is a bit unfair to mention these other threads in this one - if this thread is not just a random topic started by this particular member, then I apologise. Each new thread is just that isn't it - previous threads should not effect a new one ?
The thing is... when you take on a dog like this you should KNOW that people will avoid you.. you should KNOW that people are going to call it snow dogs etc.. I don't really understand where the surprises are?? People called my Samoyed a wolf many times and he was pure white..BUT he was a wolf "type" Samoyed and he walked (or should I say skulked ) about like a wolf.. Did I think he resembled one..hell no.. but the way he stood/walked etc did.. He resembled peoples perceptions of a wolf.... He was HUGE for a Sammy but people didn't avoid him..cos he was a white fluffy teddy bear..he was always on a lead..and was attacked by 2 off lead GSD's and an offlead whippet.. he did not retaliate and never did...(I DID THOUGH!!) The mals get all the usual names.. even had one guy tell me I should find out what am paying money for cos it was definately a wolf..(after I told him he wasn't a wolf) Every now and again they resemble the stance of a wolf.. but they do'nt look like them.. THey resemble the public perception of a wolf.. People sometimes ask what my dogs are..sometimes they assume..its good to educate people.. People sometimes cross the road, so what.. means I don't have to stop Cruiser from licking their faces on the way past LOL People with dogs cross the road..GOOOD I don't like other dogs in my dogs faces cos I don't know how the other dog will react.. People with off lead dogs letting them run up to mine are asking for trouble..and when their dogs get it..TOUGH!! If a program was on the TV tonight about every wolf and every watched it.. They wouldn't call any of the dogs wolves plain and simple...
Yes it was started as a chatty thread about a light hearted topic! I did also have another on about people calling Ela and Kiska 'snowdogs' which then in turn spawned the 'what people say about yoru dogs that annoy you' thread. Again very light hearted and just a bit of a moan about the nuckle draggers in my area. Not sure why some people seem to think i have a chip on my shoulder when i have been happily chatting with people for a number of posts with out any problems. There seem to be plenty of other people on her with a bug to bear that pass without comment.
But YOU started it as a NI thing...The title alone suggests you think that people are avoiding you simply because you have a NI!! Some people may have dogs that don't like other dogs so they cross the road Some people may be scared of that particular type of dog so they walk away. Some people may have been attacked by that type of dog so walk away their dog may have been attacked by that type of dog IT may be a big dog thing.. Maybe they fear your dogs and are keeping them safe Maybe they don't like the colour of your hair Mayeb its your lurcher they don't like..NOT your NI.. Who cares if people walk away.. you are walking your dogs do that and then go home..simple
