i only know about one- she's very food orientated, inclined to run and not good at recall. i see her on the beach everyday, her owner says they are beagle traits. she will run to me, as soon as she spots me, often a fair way, and only comes for a treat, cos she knows i have them in my pocket. and will ignore her owner until i say 'no more' lol but she is the sweetest thing

Also thinking of getting a beagle in a year or so. As i spent about 2 years researching into my NI and picking a breeder i thought i would start now!

Anyone have any advise or know of a good ethical breeder? Would be a pet home only.

The beagles we have had in class have alwasy been very good natured and responsive. Some of them have had an interesting interpretation on recall, but those were rescued ex pack dogs.

I think they are great little dogs with loads of character. I have a fox hound cross and was very tempted to get a beagle this time round, but OH wasn't keen.

My OH adores them, it was between a beagle (his choice) and an NI (my choice) when we very first started looking for a dog. We decided a Beagle would need someone at home for longer periods then we are at the moment.

But that wont be forever and i like to do my research before getting a pup or another dog.

Wish more people did that much research - then there might not be so many dogs in rescue :(. I had met loads of different types of dogs over the years teaching training classes and there was a whole load of dogs i would have been happy with. I wasn't particularly fussed on having any particular breed. My OH wanted a Weimerana, but i said no, he'd only met one with he fell in love with. We live in a one bedroomed ground floor flat with a cat and a garden, i work from home and he has three children so i really didn't feel it was the dog for us............so now we have a SBT and she is perfect!

Our 10 month old Beagle was our first dog. We'd never consider another breed. She's just wonderful.

Lovely temprament, always happy, great with other dogs, kids, people, looks wonderful, and really very good in *most* ways. We can take her anywhere....we just can't leave her unattended when we get there! She's a terrible chewer...but she's still just a pup :)

We've found that we can train her to do (or not do) pretty anything provided we're persistent and firm. So if you have the will power yourself I think it's quite possible to have a very obedient Beagle. In our case I'm afraid our Beagle had more will power than us, so she does have one or two harmless yet naughty habits!! Mostly involving food. :)

We too are planning on getting a second Beagle, but we're waiting until Spring/Summer 2009 as we want to have this one well trained so the pup is learning good habits from her rather than bad!

We're always home with her, and she gets stacks of exercise and socialisation. I think these two things that help us to avoid some of the problems that people experience with Beagles. We have a fenced garden, but to be quite honest I think we'd manage without it. The important thing is to get out and about in the park or country side with her every day. And to be with her pretty much constantly. Beanie is crate trained and will be quite content in her crate for about 4 hours maximum provided we tire her out first. So we can go out without her. But we don't do it often as we miss her to much.
