    Why NI?

Now on this forum i have seen a number of people saying that we only got our NIs based on looks ( ). So to carry on with some of my other threads about how you fist found out about NI's. . . .

Why did you get your first NI? I say first because these dogs are SOOO addictive most people have more then one. Just wait till i get a bigger house and we will no doubt be on the look out for a friend for Ella!

I have to say I went on looks, found a piccie on the net loved what I saw made enquires went to see a couple, was given all the wrong information, had my boys slatted on the net by the N.I society members, was told my breeder was misinformed about who to breed from, now feel gutted and dupped, learned a valuable lesson, won't have another N.I.

I found out about Northern Inuits through a friend who had a so called wolf x dog ( a big gsd ) i was interested in his temperament more than anything else.
He downloaded a lot of info for me about a kennels close by, i did some more research and ended up going to look at the kennels and their dogs a good few times over 3 years, I was not impressed by the kennels themselves but this was the only breeder anywhere near me that i could go and see whenever i wanted to.
After 3 years of research I bought Shila 6 months after getting Shila I got Isis
I did not go for looks, the looks as a big bonus i was mainly interested in a different dog with a brilliant temperament, well I certainly got that

For me it was the possiblity of being able to TRAIN my dog! I love my Husky to bits but i don't love how hard they are to train to do anything. A simple walk off lead often turns into a battleground . . :(

So for me the NI was a win win breed, the northern breed looks but a bit more trainable.

For me it was about looks... but before getting one... we read the write up on them on the net/forums and met a couple of breeders and their dogs... then we decided to go ahead. They can`t be all bad... cos we went and got another one :p

I wanted a second dog as a friend for my Murphy lab. I was looking for a breed of similar energy, personality, size and health. When i found NI's i thought they sounded perfect for me. I have always loved the look of northern breeds but never felt i would be able to cope with one. When i decided to get an NI i went to a breeder and asked for specific personality traits. I didnt specify colour or size or anything like that just personality and that it be a bitch as my lab is male and i didnt want any dominance issues. I got exactly what i wanted in Vienna personality wise and of course i also think she has grown up to be a beautiful looking dog. No she might not be the perfect example of an NI but do i care? NO! I got exactly what i wanted so im a happy bunny :)
When i decided to get my second NI i returned to the same breeder to see if she had a male pup that would fit my personality wants and fit in with my lifestyle and other dogs. She did, so he became mine! It was never about what they looked like to me but all about personality and i couldnt be happier with my lot. Again he might not be the best example of the breed but his personality is exactly what i wanted and exactly as his breeder said. And of course he is my baby so i think he is gorgeousy handsome too lol.
I would have another NI from my breeder in a heatbeat. She knows her dogs and pups and understood what i wanted from my dog and delivered me a pup which had exactly the personality & qualities i asked for. Like i said before, i couldnt be happier! x

I have written this on another thread but it answers this question so I've copied and pasted it:

I wanted a family companion who would possibly be able to engage in some doggie sport such as riding alongside a bike, pulling a scooter, agility, shutzhund (sp?), obedience, flyball etc. I wanted a dog I would feel safe walking alone at night and that could act as a visual deterrent to attackers or burglers, but without strong guarding instincts or a history of aggression problems associated with the breed. I wanted a dog that could get on with other dogs, cats and children and that had flexible exercise needs as there are times when I am unable to move much and can't get out to walk, yet other times I would like to take my dogs out for hours at a time. I wanted a breed that was likely to develop a strong bond with its owner - almost a psychic connection if you like, of being 'tuned in' to my medical condition and level of ability on a given day. I prefer large breeds generally (not exclusively) as I like BIG doggie hugs. I'm not a fan of dogs who have been bred so far from that natural physique of a wild dog that they develop back, breathing or whelping problems because of their physical shape. I wanted a dog that could enjoy off-lead walks around the area in which I live and which could possibly be trained as a PAT dog. I wanted breed which showed an aptitude for training in general and a will to please. A tendency to dominate unless handled firmly was not a problem (- I don't treat my dogs like little spoilt babies or try to humanise them), but I didn't want a breed who was likely to become possessive over people or property. Shedding presented no problems and I was willing to spend a reasonable time on grooming, but didn't want a dog that would be TOO much work if they were regularly jumping in rivers or the like. I LOVE dogs that howl, but don't like dogs who bark excessively. Separation anxiety was not really a problem as I am at home most of the time and always planned to get more than one dog.

Northern Inuits fit the bill perfectly and I'm VERY happy with my choice of breed.

I got a Mal cos I prefer my dogs to look like their breed standard..

I just found it funny that the OP sounded like they weren't happy with most people on here saying that NI owners got their dogs for their looks when most NI owners have answered saying they DID get their NI for looks..

SO.. in essence we (the people who say this) are right..

My story is a wee bit different lol.

I was looking in the SSPCA rescue centres for a companion for my rescue Rottie girl and saw what looked to be a huge sable/white GSD. I enquired about him (was totally smitten by him) only to be told that he wasnt up for rehoming to the public since they thought he was a wolf hybrid. The girl showed me the paperwork and he was a registered NI. Very aloof but also very beautiful with yellow eyes. He was later rehomed as a wolf hybrid to a sanctuary in England from what I was told.

I went home and chatted with my late husband about the dog and he had my sister look them up online (we didnt have a computer). Next thing I know they have bought me an NI puppy for my birthday a few weeks later  So there arrived a 12 week old bundle of patchy coat and pure mischief. He is now 7 years old and still a nightmare lol. He is hard work but soooooo worth the time and effort.

The look of a type is what can draw you to a group of breeds my post is then about what made you get a NI out of other breeds that are similar in looks.

Of course looks play a part in what type of dog a person goes for. If i wanted a small foxy looking dog i would then not look at the great dane! But then what made someone pick a Pom over say a Japanese Shiba Inu . . .

Hang on unless im very much mistaken only abut half of the answers on this thread say they got their NI for their looks. If only half the people did that then surely that cannot mean that MOST get them for their looks?
However i do think you have to at least like the look of a dog to want to research more about their personality. I dont know of anyone who got a breed of dog whos personality they did like but they didnt like their look?!
Personally i cant stand the look of those hairless cats so i would never ever dream of getting one. One of the things i like most about cats is having them sat on your lap purring like mad while you stroke them. I cannot fatham having a 'bald' cat to stroke!

I know of N.I bitches who have had whelping problems, probably due to physical shape...

No but if you get a dog purely based on looks then that causes problems . . . . .
