If well socailised as puppies they are happy to play and can be well behaved. In my experience, once they're fully mature, they not so keen on the ankle biters attacking them, which ankle biters have a habit of doing to most big dogs. So always air on the side of caution as the ankle biter may get trod on and you will get the blame as you own a big vicious dog ;-) My Rottie Ripley was introduced to his new half brother a bullmastiff cross and at first he didn't like him and made it clear that he was the boss. After some intervention by the alpha male that Alfie would be staying in our house from now on, he kind of relaxed. Was not so much fun to start with as Ripley would never get out of Alfie's way, so he had to wait to pee in the garden until Ripley cleared the doorway. Anyway, they now best of friends and are inseparable. In fact I don't get a look in anymore :-(
I agree with the last reply, my Rotties have always been brought up with other breeds, mini schnauzer mainly and they have all mixed. I also ran a boarding kennel for years and my dogs were ok mixing with any breed providing I knew the dog well enough.
My Rotts have no dog aggression problems and can be trusted when introducing them to less confident dogs. Mine live happily with ACDs and Swedish Vallhunds and of course pussie cats
I agree with everyone else on this as long as they are socialised properly then they get on great with everything. They are just the same as every other breed really as long as the socialisation is there i dont see a problem x
I have no aggression issues with my lot, they are happy to meet dogs and every other type of animal under the sun
I agree with Shona - they're just the best dogs ever. But (there's always a small but). I have had rotties for nearly 30 yrs now and they are lovely dogs. They love & cherish the dogs they get to know the first 3 yrs of their life. After that I find them more reluctant to get new friends. They are not hostile towards other dogs, but they usually need quite a lot of time to include the new dog among their "friends". Anyone else expirienced this with their rotties??
My OH's mom and dad have always had Rotties, and they've been brought up well socialised with other dogs and are as daft as a brush. Really lovely natured dogs
I havent really noticed, though I run a training club so my lot are used to meeting new dogs all the time, so that could be a major factor, I think after three they prob dont go at it with that puppy attitude which I guess could look like they are more aloof to it, I think it's a bit like they are so confident in there own skin they dont care who's there kind of thing,
Well I don't have rottis myself, but have met Shona's a couple of times on different walks with a mixture of different people and dogs. I can honestly say I've never seen/heard one growl, one curled lip, raised hackles or any sign at all of her dogs being uncomfortable around any dogs, ranging from JRT to Leonberger. Yes, they don't bound around like puppies playing chase with all the other dogs but they are more than happy to have a meet and greet and are just very laid back around a real mixture (and number) of other dogs. I've seen them be so gentle with a CKCS, which they never met before and which was at first terrified of them. Not in 'real life' but I have also seen a video of them being harrassed by a wee JRT who was jumping all over them (on their backs, in their faces etc) and they just took it all in their stride. I'm sure any dog owner of any breed would be proud to have dogs with the temperament/disposition of Shona's.
I'll definitely second that - even with Gizmo badgering shonas pair - they were excellent, didn't even tell him off, though there is plenty of time for that, lol.
thanks Hali, moneys in the post lol, I think sometimes I give a one sided view of the breed, its good when someone who has met them but doesnt own the breed puts there side over ;-) you biring up a fair point in as much as they dont tend to dive around doing the doggy stuff, what can I say, they are German after all I have to say, Gizmo was the only dog they really showed any intrest in, but they are always like that round puppys, another strange part of the breed, even the males seem to .................adore pups they never tell another dog off, they run to me with that look on there face " mum !! mum get him telt" lol even if a dog has a nark, nip at them they just tend to do nothing, I think for them to stand there ground something would really need to come at them hard and hurt them, they are a strange lot I guess
Shona, your dogs sound fabulous. Just wish i was closer the girls would love um....they are a credit to you
lol found the vids hali mentioned whats wee guss like eh http://s133.photobucket.com/albums/q46/shona2399/?action=view¤t=lucy002.flv http://s133.photobucket.com/albums/q46/shona2399/?action=view¤t=lucy001.flv
thank you, I do feel they are a credit to the breed, I just wish more people had good experiances with them, Its horrid when your out and so many people say, oh my dog was attacked by a rottie, :-( the CKCS that hali mentioned had been attacked by one, the poor wee sole had bad facial injurys with one eye missing, { I didnt ask but assume it was during the attack, but It may have been something entirely diff, I dont know for sure, I have to say the owners were ok about it meeting my two, the poor wee sole was really frightend to start with,
love the video's. Struggled to play them first, computers having a bit of a "go slow" day Patients of a saint, spring to mind
lol, I think they just kinda plunder on thinking if I ignore it for long enough it will go away. I think its because they are stupid, any sort of reaction would involve thinking, way to hard work for them,
