Hi There, My BF is talking about getting a GSD im not sure he definately will get one, has just said that he'd like to and was going to look in the paper So i thought rather than let him loose on the local freeads, i;d ask on here if anyone knows of any reputable breeders. I will happily admit i know nothing about them, but would be concerned mostly about the temperments as i have seen some be very aggressive towards my dogs on walks. So a well raised and socialised puppy is a must IMO. Health of course is important as i believe they can have hip problems? :? Anyway, he says he wants a long haired one. Anyone know of any breeders before he goes off to the local puppy farm?

Well it's Longcoated not haired one of my pet hates is LC GSDs being called longhaired Does he know the health checks that must be done before breeding GSDs or what to ask ? Hips & Elbows for both & the dog(as in the father) must be haemophillia tested. You could try your nearest breed club there's a list of KC registered breed clubs at the bottom of the page
GSD's can be wonderful dogs, again as has been said before it is mostly the way they are brought up. We had one when I was a kid and a friend has a long haired boy at the moment, our one ignored other dogs unless they started on here, and Kane gets on well with other dogs. So again it is dependent on the owners, I love them myself, if OH liked them we would have one.
I used a list that was in the one of the dog magazines, these were supposedly under the tag of 'better breeders' but my poor boy had problems all his life. Shepherds are prone to Hip Dysplasia, Colitus and anal ulcers (very painful, smelly and will not always heal) From the age of about 2 he was on Rimadyl, then as he got older he couldn't have anything that had pork in. Finally in 2003 he got anal ulcers and was being treated for these up until he was put to sleep in 2007. I would recommend that if your friend gets one get Insurance....Tulsa was on tablets for 2 months and a months supply cost about £204.00 as well as cryosurgery every few weeks. In the end it was a combination of hips giving up and the squits as well as the ulcers and the risk of infection that myself and my vet decided the time had come, he would only have had a couple of weeks longer.
