Yep, that is correct. It was felt that it did not look good that our forces were using dogs of the enemy, so decided to change the name!

In my opinion I think it would be nice to see the straight backed and curved back GSD's seperated as they have a different stance and look about them. And as some would say temperment, I haven't noticed any difference myself. But perhaps call one GSD and the other GSD(Alsation) in a similar way the BSD's are seperated :D

I think you'd find this with any of the breeds you are looking at hun, IMO for agility and obedience you will be better off with working lines!

Good luck in your hunting, and I look forward to seeing the puppy pics

JMO but I think you would be much better off in the long run going to some shows and looking around (you can do so on the net) and see which lines you like best. Ask the breeders if their dogs do agility, have a chat and get to know the breed and which dogs you prefer. I know how tempting it is to see a litter ready in a few weeks and sometimes this is a good idea when you know the breed well enough already.

If you ask for this breeders affix you can start doing some research now on their lines if you like.

I agree. If you want agility and obedience, protection dog than go for a working line. If you want to show, go for show lines.

Must add tho that some (not all) dogs from working line tend to be more demanding than show dogs.
We have a very good breeder of working line GSDs here and my friend bought a female there. She wanted a dog with which she could work (obedience, protection work) but would be a trusthworthy pet. The breeder told her he has a litter and she went to see it. She explained to him what she expects from a dog and he said that currently he doesn't think any of the pups would fit perfectly (only two were still available and one of them was a male) so she decided to wait for 6 months (the puppies were from a different mother) when he had the next litter and she went there agin and he helped her choose the right puppy (she wanted a female). She does protection and obedience with her and now she has even bred her for the first time (3yrs old). When she had puppies everyone could play with them and their mother without a problem.
What I am trying to say here is that you shouldn't rush into anything, sometimes you have to wait a bit for you dream dog.

those poor dogs, how can anyone be proud to breed something that looks like a genetic accident?

Suze, we had a standard poodle at agility the first year, he was BIG!! and a bit of a lad, with a norty look in his eyes. Lots of bounce and talent, but the owner dropped out due to personal circumstances.

yes, working lines have straighter backs.
But in working line they don't only breed black and tan, there are a lot of greyish, blackish working GSDs.

There are also some mixed lines (show and working). I would suggest you to go to some working dog competitions as there you will have the chance to meet some working GSDs and their owners and maybe you will like some and you will find out from which breeder they are.
I have some videos of trained GSDs it is really great to see dogs obeying so much. And they do enjoy it :)

There is also Black and gold, Sable or all-black and Champagne or White . The Whites are not recognised for Showing, which is odd because one of the original Breed dogs was white.
Daisy is black and gold, with a Medium coat.
I do love the old-fashioned working-type short-coated black and tans, but as I take Rescues, I usually get the fluffier ones who looked cute as puppies then dumped when they turned into `teenagers!
