Questions (What are Northern Inuits like as pets) Questions

Hi I think I saw something about these dogs the other day, will have to have a look around, but in the mean time can you answer sone questions I have pls?

What are their temperment like? Are they good with other dogs, and what are they like to train? More importantly do they make good family pets for people with kids? Do they have health problems?

I think it depends on the lines and it's upbringing.

ANy dog can be unsociable, not like children etc, the list goes on, and NI's are no different, as the carry traits from their original breeds, some more strongly than others. If you read about them on here you will see there are lots with differing personalities and traits etc, so you should be able to make up your own mind from that

Hello Lucy. We have northern inuits and my experience of my own and others that I have met is that in the right home they have wonderful temperaments.

They are very easy to train aslong as it is made fun for them. We do obedience and have just started agility with our 2 year old.

Like has been suggested the best place to find out more about northern inuits is the northern inuit society.

Hi, I've got two Northern Inuits, they are gorgeous dogs, very loyal and loving. They make good pets only if you have enough space for them to run around, enough time to spend with them (not dogs to be left alone for long periods) and enough knowledge to train them! I would say they aren't ideal for first time owners, they can be hard work. They grow very quickly and are strong dogs. They are good with kids but can be clumsy so need to be watched with small children. They are usually good with other dogs but do play rough! In general they don't have many health issues but it's wise to check hip scores.
Like any breed they need good socialising and training. If you get it right you will have a wonderful companion, get it wrong and you've got your worst nightmare!

I have 3 Northern Inuits and a 4 year old child (he was 1 when we got our 1st NI). They are great with children (in my experience) although being big they obviously need to be watched around smaller children as they often don't realize their own strength and small kiddies can easily be knocked over! I also find that the bitches are much more tolerent of being 'manhandled' (so to speak) by my son.

Mine are great with other dogs but do play rough, I have before now been accused of being a bad owner for letting my dogs 'fight'!!

They are very loyal and loving and often have a tendancy despite their size to think they are a lap dog and love nothing more snuggling up on the couch for big hugs.

On the down side (I say down side but to me none of these are an issue, so I suppose it depends on the individual) they are not good at being left for long periods, they are heavy shedders and they can have a tendancy to be rather vocal. They are not big barkers but do like to howl and hold conversations, I can have full blown convosations with mine with them talking in a a series of woo woo's and grunts etc

Think that pretty much covers most of the bases, give me a poke if I've missed anything!!

I'd like to add, that both of mine have the most wonderful temperament, though NI can look vaguely similar to GSD the temperament is completely different, which is why I chose to get one.
But they are useles as a guard dog as neither of them bark, and yesterday Sapphire escaped and completely ignored me as she was having fun running up and down the road, then she went to a complete stranger as soon as he called her. So her recall is dependant on her mood, but Talli has very good recall and always comes straight to me.
Sapphire has had no health problems, will eat any food without upset tummy. Talli is sensitive to some foods.

Most NI owners have more than one, so the good points must out way the bad, and if I ever got another dog I would choose to have another NI

Hi.. i to have two Northern Inuits. They both have great temperaments, but different. Our bitch is great with people she knows but can be wary of strangers, she picks and chooses which unknown dogs she likes or dislikes. Our Dog loves everyone and all other dogs he meets. They both are very boistrous at play... have knocked both myself and 6ft 2" OH over whilst playing together and not looking where they are going. So you do need to be watchful with young kids. You can also try taking a look at The Inuit Dog Association website... oceans of info on there about the NI.

Thank you to every one, these dogs do sound lovely but there seems to be a lot of conflict and confrontation between owners/breeders. I don't wish to become apart of this, but I wish you all the best of luck

This sounds strange, and that you would think about getting a NI dog as your first choice of dog. There must be many NI owners who choose not to be part of any forum/society/association/club, and are happy to live with their pet dog without any confrontation. It's not compulsory.

I'm sorry I don't understand :? why would it strange for me to get an NI as my first dog? NI is not my first choice, as I haven't yet chosen what breed to get. If you read my intro you will see that I am intersted in Mals, but from what I had read (which I am finding out may not be strictly true) I thought that they may not be the right dog for me, hence this thread to find out about the NI as a possable choice.

Thats fine, but I would like to be a part of a forum/society/association/club and have nice chats about my chosen breed, but from what I have read most threads on here about NI's turn nasty. I don't wish to offend anybody, as I have said these dogs look and sound lovely but I want to be able to chat about my chosen breed without worrying if/when it will turn. Thats all I ment.

On the NI forum / association i belong to, there has NEVER been a nasty word uttered to anyone or about anyone. So it all depends on where you`re asking questions.
