I don't want to start a debate or anything; I just found this interesting, especially the picture of Lucy. Her ears look surprisingly large and I know that ear size has often been a discussion point with respect to the ear sizes of Utonagan and Northern Inuits and comparisons with wolves. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/6897680.stm
Yes they do look unusually large for an Arctic wolf! There is a wide variation in the form of wolf sub species around the globe and ear size is determined by latitude and climate. Large ears for better heat dissipation in hot climates and small, thick, well furred ears in the cold, but not so small as to compromise hearing. Shape is vital too and wolves tend to have wider base with more rounded tips than most dog breeds... for better circulation and hearing. Thank you Pod - how fascinating! Unfortunately I can't see your links but I will go away and look up what you have said. Thanks for that info.
Hmmm, that's strange, the links didn't work from there. They're on this page here - http://www.lioncrusher.com/animal.asp?animal=35
Takoda has a really wide base to his ears but then he has a big head though i'm not sure what he keeps in it lol. His ears are also so thick (opps something else in common with his head) - I think he was built to last lol I always see alot of variation between all wolves due to the reasons pod gives.
wow! those Arctic hares are HUGEEE!!! i love these wolfs, great pics! my favs are the: British Columbian, Eastern timber and the Tundra Wolf!
