Alaskan malamute advice needed Questions

Ok I love alaskan malamutes and in two and half months will be the proud owner of one. I have done lots of research and have been waiting for this one since Febuary. I have been with the breeder from the begining through every step, and her bitch is due july the 16th I will hoefully be there for the birth and will be going to going to the scan next week.
But reading all the books on the breed isn;'t as good as advice from happy Mal owners and although my friend has given me lots of advice and will be there for any help I may need, all dogs are diffrent so any Mal owners out there that has any advice for me that would be great.
I will be getting a bitch which is new for me because we've always had dogs. We already have a Neo Mastiff so are used to large breeds any advice you can throw may way will be greatful .

I have two Malamutes and often dognap several others- they are great fun animals to have.

Oh my god they are beautiful, My mal will just be my pet(i think). I'm able to take her to work with me i'm going to make sure I train her properly and spend as much time with her as I can without spoiling her. We have built a huge dog house out side as I have been told they like the out doors but she will not have to go out tere if she doesn't want to our kitchen has access out side at all times. Although I have had large breed dogs before this will be a new experience for me. I'm very excited I've waited nearly a year for my pup. I'm not sure weather I will breed it isn't something I was planning on doing but I may do yet.

We pick our malamute girl up 5 weeks on friday and we cant wait we`ve waited nearly 3 years for the right breeder and the right time and finally its here and we cant wait, going to see her on saturday evening so will post lots of piccies

Waiting since Febuary for mine the mum is due next month so it will be September before I can bring her home but I will be able to go and see her during that time. I might also be present at the birth. I can't wait got everything ready even bought a old land rover to fit both dogs in (our Mastiff is 13 stone) We'll have to keep each other posted and let me know how you get on.

Personally I think you should hold off even thinking about breeding until you learn more about the breed. Books are great but they are no substitute for real experience and I know you said that you have you breeder to turn to for information but they are extremely new to the the breed themselves, as their bitch is their first Mal and she is only 2 1/2. Wait and see how your pup turns out, whether or not she is a good example of the breed, has all the relevant health checks and has a great temperament before you even consider breeding. I know of a few Malamutes who have had litters of 13 pups and finding good homes for them can be an arduous task.

Aside from that I wish you all the best with your new pup! Malamutes are a wonderful breed and though I am sure she will keep you on your toes you'll have some fantastic times together

Having 4 malamutes, the only advice I can give is plenty of SOCIALIZATION, and plenty of bait for training and get a good hoover seriously they do need plenty of socialistion that goes without saying, but thats like any other breed to get well balanced dogs, take things easy when they are pups as far as exercise is concerned so they dont damage joints I would average 5 minutes exercise for every month of age when they are young.(apart from running about and playing in your garden)enjoy your puppy they are not puppies for long. Our girl is coming from the Kegluneq kennel Mo have been a fan of Lorrs dogs since I met my first malamute at a rally 3 years ago since then every mal we`ve picked out at rallies and shows has been a kegluneq

Thank you for your advice, it is more then likely that my mal will be a pet only. I would not go into breeding unless I was sure that I could care for the bitch and the puppies to a high standard, but it is very doubtful that I will go into breeding but never say never. One thing is for sure and that is my Mal will be looked after and cared for, and well loved and i'm looking forward to our time together.

Also I will not be able to breed my bitch unless I have permission from the stud dog owner!!! No means no ! I have great respect for Malamute breeders and i'm just pleased and happy that I will own one soon.

Vicky, I am sure you will enjoy your pup and go about things correctly, as you can appreciate I an d other malamute owners on this board are passionate about the breed and where the breed is heading, all too often we hear of new owners who say"I'm not sure wether I will breed it isn't something I was planning on doing but I may do" then a not very long after they are announcing that they have bred, many a time the dog being bred from has not passed all the health checks, not proven itself in the showring or in a working environment, they have been bred because they are a "pedigree" so when someone makes the comment, above a red light turns on and makes us wary. I am sure its the same in all breeds, I wish you luck with your pup, I hope that it turns out to be everything you have ever wished for, I hope you become as passionate about the breed and where it is heading as the rest of us, and I pray that should you EVER decide that breeding is something you are going to do, that you study bloodlines, study genetic problems within the breed, that your dog proves itself in the showring/working environment, and I hope it passes all the health checks and is of the correct age before breeding. I look forward to being a friend and fellow malamute owner and looking forward to seeing pictures and post about its life with you.

Yes.. I did.. and I found him and he was worth every minute of that wait...

I hope you can share advice with me, i'm really looking forward to getting my Mal, i'm very lucky as i'm able to take her to work with me so she will not be at home on her own while we are at work. We already have a Neo Mastiff who is huge,we did have a rough collie but i'm afraid I had to have him put down last year he was very ill it broke my heart Reef(the mastiff) loved him and he's never really been the same since so he will love this new dog. We just bought a land rover (old one) for the dogs and my husband has made a ramp so the dogs won't have to jump in and out, our mastiff can't jump high anyway.
I used to work in a rehomeing centre when I lived in manchester and have seen first hand dogs that haven't been looked after, or sent there because owners haven't looked into the breed properly I just want to say to any Mal owners reading this (because I feel some of you have taken me the wrong way) I'm not pretending to know it all about this breed but I have read up on them talked to owners been to shows, but this breed will be new to me, also having a bitch will be new to me as i've always had dogs. I haven't gone out and bought the first one I could get my hands on I've waited for one that I know is going to be a nice pup, that the breeder has put in an awful lot of work to make sure they have done everything right.
I know of breeders in my area that only have pups for the money I would never do this I can see why my comments about breeding could of come across as a bit careless.I just wanted to makesure I have been seen as one of thoses Mal owners you would worry about.
