Oh my word, Anya is just the spitting image of Bo (I shouldn't sound surprised really, they are litter mates ). Nice to see you on here again.

What a difference in coat type between Mishka and Anya!

Does anybody elses slovak have a fruit fetish or is it just Cheska? She will steal Apples, pears, kiwis & bananas at any cost, have had to put all fruit in cupboard as she will steal it no matter how high the shelf! Is she bizarre or are are they all fruit mad?

I dunno about fruit fetish, but Bo definately has a general food fetish  Although she has the sh*ts (again!) at the moment and has been on rice all day, much to her disappointment.

I am so laughing, Cheska would eat all day just like Bo, but since your great advice on the JWB we have had no more S****, we are in Cornwall for a week from the 9th May in a 4 bed cottage, just 2 of us and 2 dogs, if you have free time you are welcome to come down for a couple of nights, we could have a pointer sister reunion??

If only I were a little closer! most of my Uni deadlines are May time though unfortunately for me  Lovely offer though!!

I think it would quite manic if she met one of her siblings. Her half sister lives over the road from us (same sire, Bruce) and that is bad enough.

Oh it would be fun! they would have a ball! keep it in mind if any free time crops up between the 7th & 12th may, there is plenty of room and right on the lizard, so they can exhaust themselves, it would be great for Cheska to play with her own! If not maybe another time?

    Hi

i've been reading all your posts and laughing my head off as well as feeling very reassured. Lou very kindly pointed me in the direction of you guys a while back, and also helped me immensely in the beginning to fully understand what i had gotten myself into.

I think i've worked out that Bo, Anya & Cheska are all sisters and would've been born on 10th May 2009 at Rose Tinted Kennels ? if that is the case then i am the owner of their brother Judge who we got at 17 weeks. He was one of 3 left when we went to visit on the spur of the moment, two males (one of which was huge but very quite and relaxed) a female who was being kept for breeding and Judge who immediately endeared himself by biting my daughters leg trying to get the acorns out of her pocket. So much so that we left the kennels with him, completely unprepared both mentally and in terms of beds, leads, food etc etc.

Interestingly all of the 3 remaining pups were very smooth haired and now at 9 months old judge still does not have much of a rough coat so i'm wondering if that was why he was left behind ? did all of yours have long coats when you got them ? they seem much hairer in your pictures.

From what i've read (not on breeders & club websites which seems to be all nonsense) on your comments judge does seem to conform perfectly to the 'breed standard' in that he is an absolute berk but absolutely adorable. We really struggled at first, both my wife & I had dogs when we were children but this gave no preparation for the Judgeaggedon we experienced in the first few months. It did have me pulling my hair out, but with the help of Lou who pointed me in the direction of a great puppy school run by a lady who has a SRHP things have improved greatly.

Since starting lessons i've found that he has really started to mature and life is much easier. He still has the ability to surprise and frustrate nearly everytime we go out but it always make me laugh (after a while). He is getting very obedient now but things that i think will never change are
    1. pulling on the lead i'm quite a bit over 6 foot and he is practising being able to pull my shoulder out of the socket if he sniffs something interesting or theres another dog around.
    2. food stealing - normally he is a bit of chicken woofing from a distance at everything and trying to hide behind me if a cow or sheep then looks at him but when it comes to food he'll jump through fire to get to it.
    3. poo - wow he loves the stuff, always able to squeeze a little bit more in even if i'm standing right over and he knows he's going to get into trouble.
    4. Being a charming idiot, when he's in trouble he actually winks at you.

Fortunately i am on the downs in less than 3 minutes on foot and the beach is at the bottom of the road, so he gets plenty of opportunity to run around.

in the beginning he was a devil for jumping on people but seems to be getting much better, so much so that i can truct off the lead now when theres other people and dogs around.

I know i've rambled on but would be interested to know if any of this behaviour strikes a chord.

P.S. I have lots of pictures but no idea how to post them. Can anyone give me some tips ?

    Hi

Judge sounds adorable! Cheska was born 14th May, there were 2 litters quite close together, one litter was docked and the other litter weren't. (Is Judge docked? Cheska was from the docked litter)When we went to get Cheska she was 9 or 10 weeks old, i can't quite remeber. She wasn't overly hairy, but did have a bit of a fluffy face.
Judge sounds fab, they have such amazing characters & temperaments and they have you tearing your hair out whilst also in tears of laughter!
I would love to see some photos! There is a post on the main dogsey menu (I Think) that gives all the steps you need to post photos, if you do a search on posting photos you'll find it, i did mine through photo bucket, once you get the hang of it its easy. Can't wait to see him!

He must be from the other litter that was born 4 days earlier, when we went to get Cheska, they were all in together and there was a big undocked boy that we also fell in love with, we did ask if we could have a buy one get one free! I guess at the time it seemed worth asking, now looking back i think we would have got more than we bargained for! Did you look on the site for posting photos? The instructions are really user friendly.

    Hi,

I bet you have struggled a bit if he is your first dog (as adults)!! they are not easy dogs by any stretch, but that isn't surprising with Weim in their ancestry. ;-)

Judges' behaviour sounds normal. Pulling is difficult to crack. I personally use a Snugglesafe harness (it has a clip on the front and back) for lead walking in combination with lots of praise. Bo doesn't walk too badly on this. She walks nicely on a loose lead if I walk her at night, but is more reactive and pully during the day...too many distractions. Doing MORE lead work with her recently has helped a lot actually. I had a tendency to be lazy and just pop them in the car for a walk but I've stopped doing that now for local walks, only using the car when I want to go further afield (which isn't too often).

Food stealing...someone let me know when you crack that. Bo can be a pain in the butt at meal times especially. I tend to just give her a tripe stick or pigs ear strip while we eat to keep her distracted, or else she jumps up at the table at every opportunity.

Where in Sussex are you then?

    Looking forward to seeing pictures!

We did struggle initially, the final straw being when we returned home to find he had pulled down 2 of the kitchen curtains and had piled them into a nice soft bed from which he could survey all the skirting boards he had ripped off and chewed, plus the table, chairs and window sill that had received the same treatment. It seems like a long time ago now and he's much easier to handle on a day to day basis.

At risk of being accused of sticking to my comfort zone I try not to fight him on the lead as it ends up making me really frustrated and he doesn't enjoy it much either. We are very lucky that our garden backs on the south downs and im there in a couple of minutes where he can run like the nutter he is for as long as he wants. At least he can have some fun and so far he's pretty good at the recalls and i get him to sit, wait, go down etc for treats while were out so am still working with him. Pulling is hard wired into his DNA i think ! Managed i hope to get a few pictures up.

    Didn't work!

Just create an account on Photobucket .com. It only takes a couple of minutes to make an account and you can upload pictures straight from your computer.

Ah, he's lovely, sorry i couldn't help but laugh about the kitchen incident, i know how you feel, i had a great dane a good few years ago who shredded the sofa while i was at work and then pulled down the lounge curtains and made a bed out of them, i guess he had destroyed his comfy sofa, so felt he needed an alternative! He did settle over time! Judge looks adorable! Cheska is a bit of a puller, not too bad when i have just her, but if i take her with the terrier than i do have my hands full when they're both on the lead, but off the lead she is good with her recall and does tend to not wonder off too far without checking i am still in view. She will look out the window here and have a little bark at people walking past, which totally gets the terrier going, then she steps back and hides whilst the terrier goes to the gate to check it all out! I think between us all we should re-write the breed description!!

Lovely boy!! he is a fair amount smoother coated then our ladies in coat...the lady Slovaks are very hairy in comparison!

I have to say that Bo has never been destructive with the furniture. She has a shoe fetish (has destroyed probably 5 or more pairs of shoes and 3 pairs of slippers) and a cardboard/food wrapper shredding fetish, but that is it really. She was de-crated at 7 months which I could never have DREAMED with doing with my Labradors.

With regard to the Judges' pulling, again you just have to keep working at it. I know there is a temptation to keep him on lead for as short a time as possible to avoid the pulling, but this doesn't actually help at all. I have just got back from taking Bo out for a walk and she walked on a loose lead the entire way (of her own accord, no prompting or bribery), so it is doable!

    Hiya,

Not remembered to check out this thread and now see I've been missing out on lots of your updates!

Look at all the hairy beasties! I'm biased because I have a hairy one too. Grey looks really like Anya from what I can see. It's so weird seeing slovaks in other homes, as when they're alike they're very alike.

It's funny hearing about your descriptions too. Grey loves fruit. Loves food. Is quite obsessed. I was watching that programme on Horizon and domestic dogs and wolves and when they showed the wolf pup snatching food we were both like woa! Grey is really still quite wild around food. I wouldn't trust him and picnics, kids with food in hands etc. But not sure how much of this is to do with the breed as opposed to early developmental stuff when he was little.

I've seen small signs of him maturing (he'll be 2 in april). I do a lot of work with him on our walks. I've had lots of chats with friends in my darkest hours of worrying I can't cope and now just try to handle him and make him and me happy. He's a working breed and needs lots and lots of stimulus. If he has an interesting terrain and is given tasks to do he's brilliant. Such good fun and my best friend. My dark times are handling his reactivity and fears, which at 32KG of throwing himself around on the lead are hard to manage. A recent trainer asked me lots about his early life experiences and was convinced that this possibly has more to do with his reactivity to large vehicles and noise stimuli than anything else. So still lots to work through. But we are happy and I love him to bits. Just need to find a way for him not to be scared of things.

Judge - Eric glad to see you on here. Glad things are going well in training. I'd love to meet Judge.

Cesca - ouch. Grey did that running into a hard object at full pelt 6 months ago. Hope she's ok.

There are lots of slovak piccies and now videos online. I post stuff on the slovakian rough haired pointer group on FB. Face and the book website. There is also a group on flickr. I post stuff on Grey's blog called Grey's Days. Also as barefoothappy on youtube or you and the tube.

I agree we should probably rewrite the breed decsription! How about: unendless enthusiasm for life, ardent thief, determined puller and faithful bed companion (even if prefers sleeping diagonally across the bed so no room for anyone else).
