HI Guys -Sorry I've been so quiet - Life changes and all that malarky. Freya had tests done on her poo and they came back all clear. The Pedigree puppy food was next to go and after a change in food ,she is having a nice firm doggy doo these days. She is much fluffier than any of the others I have seen on here. I wish I could load photos She is now 21 weeks and is a real pleasure. Unfortunately I may have to re-home her as the single life and running a business are not condusive to owning a puppy. She was supposed to go on the farm 3 days a week. I am so attached to her though I pay a puppy sitter so that I can work as she hates being left.
    Best wishes all -D

    Hi Sage lady,

I'm so sorry to hear that you still have to rehome freya. That's so sad for both of you. It's heartbreaking for you both. I'm glad to hear that her poop is normal now. Well done on getting the tests done. Pups can be carriers of infections without having symptoms. Knowing she's clear is a relief.

I found one of grey's litter mates. Also had a sensitive tummy and had to change to special food. Think he's ok now.

Have you been back to the breeder re her rehoming? How about the breed club?

I can't remember where you are in the country. Just wondering if I can help.

    Love

    Lou & Grey

p.s. is she really fluffier than Grey? He's so hairy!

Hi Ros & Co, Lou & Grey
I live in Gloucestershire [countryside-hence the animal socialising]
I have socialised her so much, she loves other dogs and wants them all to play with her. She barks at children but backs away from them. When they pet her she is absolutely fine and rolls over onto her back for them to stroke her tummy. She stalks my ducks, chases pigeons, watches pheasants but sits and waits for sheep to come to her. Ignores cats and cows. She looks at horses & donkeys but does not bark.
We go to dog training every Tuesday and she is very calm and used to sleeping as I work. She lies under the desk for several hours at a time whilst I work on the computer.
We are working really hard at not pulling and I thought I had it cracked until we went to a country fair yesterday. God my arm ached. All those dogs to play with I think.
I don't know what to ask for her. I suppose I would like £500 but really I want her happy, well trained and loved.

I am happy to email photos but I haven't worked out PM or loading them up here.
I have also been so slow at rehoming her because I think she's lovely. Everyone comments on what a lovely natured dog she is.

Sage lady, we have slovak photo groups on the flickr site. Pop it into google. Then search for slovakian rough haired pointer or S.R.H.P. It's free to upload pics.

    Hi Dawn,

How come Mishka's litter sister needs rehoming? That's so sad to see so many slovaks up for rehoming in one go.

Mishka,s sister needs a new loving home as due to unforeseen circumstances in the owners work/home life they reluctantly can no longer keep her. She is a lovely natured dog. The new litter might be docked if there are working homes for some of them.
Digby the boy SRHP has a new home so thats some good news for him.
The Slovaks seem to have large litters, is that something with the breed?

    Hi Eskababe,

great to hear from you. I'd heard today that Digby was found a home. Great news. Grey's litter was 7 pups, so no idea if slovaks have large litters. I told one of my dog walking friends re mishka's litter mate.

How are your slovaks on the lead? Grey is going to have to have a head collar as he is so strong now and is head down scenting and difficult to train him every single trip out.

    Hi lou,

Im not sure but I think the larger the breed the potential of a larger litter as aposed to small breeds, not too sure.
It would great for you to have another Slovak (especially to get Mishka,s sister a new loving home) for Grey to play with. Let me know if your friend is interested in her.

Mishka will walk to heal off lead when out in the country & if I say "Back" she will walk behind me.
When you put a lead on her she wants to pull, she will only do a few steps before she pulls. Its not so bad coming away from a walk but going is a different thing. What I do now is...a few steps, she pulls, I stop, she comes to heal, we start off again. So she does know what I want but just cant stop herself.
Obviously you cant do this all the time so she is used to the halti, she walks to heal nicely until she sees another dog, then she just wants to play.

The halti is a good invention "Dogmatic" do a really nice padded one in different colours with matching lead. They have a web site. Its the same principle that they use for horses, if you have control of the head the rest of the body follows.

I really like this breed, and was seriously tempted when one gorgeous boy was up for private rehoming on here. The thing is, I'm concerned about the genepool size and inbreeding. I know this breed has relatively low numbers in the UK, but does anyone know of any recent imports, or any lines to watch out for? Thanks in advance, and it's lovely to see your beautiful dogs!

    Hiya,

I think the whole gene pool issue is a difficult one to follow even in Slovakia. I have read bits and bobs that the gene pool is small over there. Have you had a look at Michael Urban's website in slovakia. Do a google on his name and slovakian rough haired pointer. He's listed on champ dogs website and has an english language section of his site.
Info from his site on the size of the gene pool there:
" In the 1950's the breed has been registered as a Rough Haired Weimaraner. A mistake in the translation of the Weimaraner standard into Slovakian was the reason. It was in 1975 when this mistake was identified by the German Weimaraner Club, the club did not approve, and the breed was removed from the Weimaraner classification. Until this time breeding between rough and smooth had been carried out with the approval of the breed wardens. The dogs were then registered with the Slovakian Hunters Union, the breed was developed and was admired for its working ability. By 1983 the breed had developed and could be split into three genealogical lines and three unrelated breeding groups. By this time there where about 400 dogs registered and approval was sought from the FCI and its standard has an official number 320.

Weimaraner breed is sometimes used in the breeding programme but only the dogs which are filling strange condition for to be used- working quality at the first place combinated with perfekt exterieur, health and character. In 2005 we started to work out the new line for this breed as a combination of three foundation breeds like it was at the beginning. All this work is stricktly organised from our club and in the meaning of FCI rule can be done only in Slovakia as in a country of origine."

So, they only had 400 dogs registered in 1983 there.

Does it seem like slovaks are confirmed pullers then? Grey is good off the lead too and has a nice recall. I think Ros said Maggie pulls too? Grey's litter mate Gunner is apparantly lovely on the lead! Makes me feel like a bad mother! I'm still clicker training Grey and food lures for loose leash walking, but I can't seem to compete with his nose and scenting when out.

I've been recommended a Gencon head collar. Will have a look at the halti too.

Thanks very much for that. I really think they look like beautiful, purposeful dogs, but I have a lot or research to do! I'll check out Michael Urban's site as I'd really like to find out more about the distinct lines, as the pedigrees I've seen so far seem to contain a fair bit of repetition. Oh, and I'd love to see one in the field! Thanks so much for your help!
