NI owners, I love the breed. General Chat

That's what I thought I did try and explain what breed she ws, but this woman just continued to speak over me, going through all the northern breeds she could think of. In the end, I gave up

I've given up trying to explain to people. If they ask and are genuinly interested in the breed, then I'll go into my well rehearsed speel, but if the start to fade fast, I just explain in terms that I think they'll understand. Which with some folk, is very hard to do

My latest ''guess the breed'' for Jess was a old lady asking if she was an Akita... :?

She dosent look anything like one!

I think the strangest thing I was asked was if she was a Pomeranian... I can only assume that they didnt even know what a Pomeranian is! lol

Much of the breeding behind the breed type is spitz ..... since spitz is not a breed it's a type I think its a pretty accurate guess ....

I've had mine called a malamute, husky etc but the best was a lady telling her pal that it was cute for an Albino Alsation

If you're referring to the comment about my Inuit been mistaken for a Spitz, as far as I and others are aware, there's no Spitz behind the breed. Other than that, I'm not quite sure what you're referring to :? ;-)

Malamutes and Sibes are Spitz ............ I know there is a constant battle between some over what else there may be but I don't think anyone denies Malamute and Sibes being used in the creation of the Northern Inuit.

Since Mals and Sibes are both Spitz breeds then people seeing Spitz type in a NI are quite correct I would have thought. I am always quite impressed when people ask are my Mals Spitz!

The woman I was referring to meant the Japanese Spitz. Beautiful dogs in thier own right, but not one that looks like my Inuit ;-)

your not alone where i live is either staffs pits gsd jr boxers etc so when i see a breed i aint sen or adore im totally fix ated

not looking to annoy anybody but what is an NI?

i have a gsd x husky from an accidental litter and whilst i was out at the weekend somebody said he was a lovely NI, id seen a lot of NI owners on here but really had no idea of their makeup just that they look like a northern breed.

seeing as they arent KC recognised what are people taking as the standard?

The Northern Inuit dog is a strong robust animal of good nature, an all round companion and loving sociable family dog with a stunning appearance that resembles as closely as possible the wolf.

The accepted height for bitches is a minimum of 22 inches.
The accepted height for dogs is a minimum of 24 inches.
The coat is a dense double coat with longer on ruff, heavier in winter months.
The gate is graceful and long reaching.
Ears should always be erect.
Eye colour is preferably Amber to Brown.
Tail carriage should always be held low, curly tails are considered a fault.
Typical colours range from Greys to Cream, and Grizzled Brown to Black.

The Northern Inuit dog will usually mix well with other family pets because they are friendly and love companionship, they will rarely argue. They make great family members as they will bond with the entire family and love to be included in everything that the family does.

They get on well with children and are willing to play or curl up next to you on the sofa and sleep. Anyone that is privileged to own a Northern Inuit will know what a loving and caring companion they are.

The breed are not over active, they require medium exercise. They will moult twice a year but regular brushing will keep their coat in good condition.

With their incredible sense of smell, and a willingness to please the future of the Northern Inuit dogs looks bright and could provide future services such as search and rescue dogs, Guide dogs for the blind, Hearing dogs for the deaf, PAT dogs, Assistance dogs for the disabled or as the pride and joy of families as their loyal pet.

Running Cloud the acceptable height of both male and bitch NI's breed standard is being amended, so I would not post a breed height at this point in time as it may not be correct in a month or two.

I was talking with the vice president, Laura, the other night about this, she and Kate are not yet sure what the 'acceptable' height will be yet.

Saying this though, myself I do not agree with there being a restriction on size, NI's are bred to be wolf look-a-likes and in the wild sizes of wolf vary quite dramatically.

PS. We are hoping our NI Bitch, Jess, will be a Mountain Search and Rescue dog one day, the future of NI's certainly is bright!

just seen the pic running cloud posted and your about a month younger than jaeger but aside from a few different facial markings it is like looking at a picture of him

i guess what i was trying to say earlier, is NI just a name being given to crosses of a northern type and certain build or are there specific NI lines that are being bred from that are awaiting KC recognition?

Its not upto Laura and Kate to 'decide' on the acceptable height. We have an ongoing survey to get a true picture of heights, it will be taken from that and not somebodies opinion. ;-)

Some may agree with you there as alot of people have their own personal opinions on how long it takes for a breed to become a breed true to type. The Northern Inuit Dog has been around nearly 20 years.
