Can we all calm down a bit Canarydog if you have a point to make, then do it. You don't have to resolve to insulting other posters. First of all Akitas can weigh up to 11 stone with the males. If you go to any dog show you would see this. Three males I know all weigh between 10 and 11 stone. Two are champions and from very experienced kennels. Secondly you do have valid points but you don't have to be condescending to Chellie or anyone else on here. I have experience around Akitas and yes they have traits, but as I've said before most breeds do in some way. What makes them difference is their size. As you say you are so experienced then surely you would know that Akitas don't generally attack another dog unless the other dog is being aggressive towards them. Put two entire male dominant dogs together of any breed and they'll generally be a spat If we're going to talk about a breed then be balanced about it rather than spouting how the rest of us know nothing. This forum is for all to read, post on and maybe learn something. I read on other posts you have that you have had problems with your Akita with agression yet this isn't the normal behaviour of the breed as a whole. I know as I have been actively around them for the last 6 years, at their homes and at shows. You are doing the breed no favours on here. If people need educating then let them research the pros and cons for themselves. The original poster on here did and made a sensible decision, so why are you using this post to attack people interested in the breed. Point them in the right direction, not attack them.
you are all missing my point and i do agree on 99% of your last commments, i should never have bothered this is not pointed at u but others on this forum i will keep my very good knowledge of dogs to myself why should after years of my own time work, give it out in a second to then be slagged off, and i will let everyone get on with it to be honest as long as my dogs ok i am not worried about the scum that tarnish breeds, the ban i will doubt will affect any more breed bans, the Akita shouldn't be affect, the 4 that are already banned shouldn't have been, what i don't like about a comment which is funny is i make out the akita is a hard dog, maybe true but some people need this reinforced i have done this to people i know because i knew if i never and they got 1 then this would have been a nightmare, i do not need to say anything about the Akita, any 1 that knows the breed and i mean knows would know that they are a very hardy tough breed, have finaly realised that so called want to own a Akita are a Bit pathetic they should read books and surf proper internet sites, no offence to this forum but as far as a number of hard to train breeds go this is limited, I know u can have the best trained Akita but if they see a cat etc all the training goes oput the window this is not a opinion but more of a fact and the sad thing with alot of people is do they really know this dog they can as i have experienced been calm around a dog to the point that you half relax and then just go for the dog, i call this crafty cunning quite funny in a way how they out smart there owners or try lol
Canarydog, we will have to agree to disagree on this one, yes, they are stubborn, bloodyminded and sometimes downright obnoxious but I have proof in my living room that they do not need to be dog aggressive and, after nearly 12 years I do not think that that is going to change. Yes, you have to be aware of what could happen and be prepared for it but to assume it will happen is just reinforcing to the dog (down the lead as they can't be let off!!) that this is the expected behaviour. In the right hands they are a pleasure to own.
Canarydog I appreciate you are trying to put your point across but other people who also have experience in the breed will have their opinion too, which we all must respect. I notice from your profile you say you have had one akita, this doesn't really give a fair indication of the breed and from what you've posted on other threads you have had some problems with your dog. This is not a dig at you at all I hasten to add. I simply mean you probably have researched the breed extensively, however you only seem to have lived with one. The dogs I have contact with are either on there own or live together in groups. I think what you are trying to say is that anyone who is thinking of having an Akita should really research the breed. I totally agree with you on this point but I think the point applies to any breed. With all due respect though, an akita that has a go at every dog or cat in it's sight is either 1 badly bred 2 badly trained 3 medically unsound Yes Akitas are headstrong but with training they respond (on the lead) very well to training. Some even do agility although this is very minimal and in a very secure area. We have akitas that live with cats, however how many dogs will chase a cat if they see it in the street. My dogs live with cats, love them to bits. They will still chase one in the garden though if it comes over the fence. I think the best thing anyone can do if looking at ANY breed is contact the breed society. Go to some shows, go to discover dogs at Crufts, or at Earls Court. Spend a long time really looking into it. Really learn about not only the negatives of a breed but also the positives and make an informed decision.
in my eye i understand what u are saying, but the last couple of days i have been insulted i am not sure if it was on this board i have apologised for offending people that was not intentional, but the insults i have are funny because if this was in person to person i bet the gobby people would not be gobby but this is virtual so some people get to brave the administrater has moaned at me but he wants to crack down on some of the others, as far as ur dog being socialized its a bit different because u have worked hard on it and being brought up with them, but that could have easily ended up being different has i have read and talked to experts on this breed, as far as my dog having a problem you are very wrong, he is 100% Akita a Dominant male, which is totaly normal behaviour around other breeds especially male, what most Akitas do is not neccesarily attack a dog but they give it the biggen as to try and dominate the other dog just like saying don't mess with me, which does work alot of the time in the animal world, but the problem would be if the other dog was dominant and this would result in a fight, it the same as bitches with bitches apart from a few, any dog off the lead in public is irresponsible ownership, just because there dogs ok doesn't mean urs is and vice versa so if all dogs were under control there would be far less fights
Exactly in the right hand they are a pleasure to own bang on, and thats the amazing thing all the conversations on there serious side, there laid back side as u know is 95% of the time and i have never met a more gentle breed, especially with kid obviously if they have been around them, very well said
I appreciate what you say and trust me I'm gobby in real life too LOL I do have a different opinion on dog dominace with Akitas to you. In general Male akitas will not react to other smaller dogs as too be honest, they have an ego and see most dogs as no threat. However if a dog was to get in it's face and have a go then an akita will possibly react. The easiest thing is to say "they won't start it, but they'll certainly finish it" I do think also that two male entire akitas living in a househould will generally not get on. But that again applies to alot of breeds, especially when you bring bitches into the equation. The only thing I think is you keep the dogs apart as there is no way anyone could pull two 10 stone dogs apart, so you air on the side of caution for the safety of your dogs. Two yorkies having a scrap are a bit easier to separate. Again you have the weight issue which you have to respect with any large dog. I too have had experiences of walking the akitas on a lead under control, and other peoples dog have rushed it, giving it attitude (don't know why but it seems to be small dogs") I have shouted at the owners to recall their dog and they seem to think it's me that has the problem because here I am with a big imposing breed on a lead so it must be nasty
I think you're spot on Megan. I use another forum which is dedicated to Akitas so there are a lot of Akitas owners, many have more than 1 Akita. I think it certainly isn't a breed for the faint-hearted and I've heard people say that they aren't for novices but I have to disagree. I think it depends on how much you know about the breed, whether you are willing to put the time and effort into training and socialising and finally, I think it's about the type of person you are. I'm a very confident and assertive person and most people that know me would say i'm the type of person to take control of a situation. I personally love Akitas, I think they're a magnificent breed, very proud, strong and intelligent. I've spent time researching the breed, understanding their traits etc. I've researched the downsides to the breed and the only thing that I won't like is when they blow their coats! I'm pleased to see more Akita owners on the forum as well. I didn't see any when i first joined so I hope the owners will continue to post about their dogs because I'm still researching the breed and want to learn as much as I can before I get mine.
They love the cold weather, i have had to climatise to having a cool house because it gets a bit to much for him, Wooden, laminated or tiled is the best bet, alot easier to hoover plus it keeps them cooler
ahh so are you looking to buy the Japanese type? lovely dogs a little different to the Akita or Great Japanese dog
Just a note to say Canarydog has been banned. He was asked to show better courtesy and respect to his fellow members but refused.
