Looking for info on american bulldogs.....

I have an 8wk old american bulldog x staffy and im fishing for a bit of info on the american bulldogs.

the breeder i got georgie from has a male and a female am bulldog. they are the most gorgeous dogs ive ever seen. i researched into them before i got georgie but ive not spoken to anyone who actually has 1.

is there anyone out there with an american bulldog? if so, what do you make of the breed?

Can't help I am afraid, the America Bulldog is not a breed listed by any of the recognised Kennel clubs, not the American, the UK nor the International so there is little information and no records as far as I can see.

I have an American Bulldog :)

My honest opinion? They are a breed that requires firm and consistent training very early in life, not a dog for the first time Bully Breed owner. I can put you in touch with a couple of reputable breeders so you can have a chat with them.

I find them to be a very intelligent breed, infact to clever for their own good at times  I do love this breed but hand on my heart I can say it's a breed I would choose not to own again if god forbid anything happened to my dog, she's four now and been hard work from the start - Only seems to be calming down a bit now

Strange one this, georgie seems to have the look of an american bulldog but the temprement of a staff. He is already very loyal, obedient, willing to please us, intelligent, gentle and above all healthy and fit.

I will let you know as he grows up what hes like.....

HI TT, I have 5 American Bulldogs, 2 dogs and 3 females. I find they are a very fit, loyal and intelligent breed. I have experience with many other large breeds including Great Danes, Rottweilers, Ridgebacks, as well as many bully breeds, APBT, Staffies, irish staffs, etc. Our American bulldogs just seem to love human company, and being the centre of attention also. I know you have to take each dog on their own merit, but the American Bulldog, as a breed, is everything I look for in a dog, and a fair bit more.

Try the ABA or the NKC for any and all info you need to know about this breed, there is plenty of information and breeding records going back to the late 1940's, and their true origins as a working breed go way way back in history.

Who are the ABA and NKC not as far as I know kennel clubs that are internationally recognised any more than the breed is, and the information given on the internet about the breed ranges far and wide as do the photos of the dogs purporting to be AB's.

Forgot to mention, we lost an 18 month old female, Belle, about 3 months ago, she was full of cancer! She was a pup we bred and kept for ourselves. Broke our hearts, still does.

Belle at 6 weeks old, love ya, RIP

Bob, looks like a Johnson/Hines mix and the others look like pure Hines bred dogs (although I could be wrong) but Bob defo has the look of Hines/Johnson dog, he looks very alike my AB around the face. :)

They are always very friendly when we see them and they love Alfie.I l really like their the White boy ,hes such a cutie, very strong for a pup, and full of beans.
We often bump into them and i find it interesting discussing the differences in their shows and rules etc.......

Hi, yes Bob is a Johnsons/Hines cross, and all others are hines.

I should have said Bob is a Johnsons/Hines mix, not cross, as this may imply a x breed. He is a pedigree A. Bulldog, not a x-breed.

Ragga your ab's look divine
They really are gorgeous dogs. Chillie looks just like georgies dad. same colouring. Georgies dad is a hines. Looking at your picture of your 7wk old pup there, georgie has a ab muzzle but staff top half of his head. He is already showing signs of a very muscular body and he certainly has the ab paws, not a staffs...they are huge!
My vet said he is going to be 1 chunky lil lad!! ;-) and he is obviously eating very well.....he is 9 wks old and weighs 7.2kg already!! Like you say about your ab's, georgie is soooooo loyal, even at this young age, and he is so friendly. He's obedient and enjoys human companionship.

Did you have trouble with the puppy nipping with your a.b's? if so, how did you combat it? At the moment the only thing georgie seems to listen to is a firm " no biting " he doent listen to any other way ive tried to teach him to stop nipping. I know its only puppy play but he needs to know from this early age that he cant do it as i have children. He really really loves the kids, and although im not bothered about him play biting me - i tell him no as i dont want him doing it to the kids.....not with these razor sharp needle like teeth!

HI, my a.bulldog pups are, like any other pups, prone to try and chew anything and everything, including fingers and toes, but i found the best way to combat this is to give them something to chew and play with them when they start nipping, diverting their attention to a toy/tugger when they are "full of beans", but do not give the pups something to chew/ play with unattended, they can quickly chew off and swallow all matter of things. If the pup still nips, a firm "No" command, in a rather gruff deep tone tends to get their attention, then play with them with the toy. I find using a dog cage indoors ideal because once the pup has had enough playing you can place him in the cage to sleep, locked, safe, where he cant chew anything saving precious family fingers, furniture, and eliminating any risk of the pup damaging himself. Also another point with nipping children is that when the pup nips a child and the child shrieks or yells (usually a high pitched scream of some form), this gets the pup excited and sort of turns it into a game, pup nips, child shrieks, pup gets excited, so nips again, child screams, and on it goes. Diverting the pups attention to the toy/tugger/ nylabone is the best way to stop them nipping, in my experience. Hope this helps

Hiya Ragga, thanks for the advice. Yep i agree if the child cries the pup does it all the more! Although my kids tend to play with georgie the min he seems hyper so he usually does get the toys put in his mouth instead of fingers. He seems to nip the adults more than the kids, and still to this day he has never nipped my youngest, maybe he knows she is the youngest in the pack. My husband lets him nip him but im trying to tell him not to coz georgie will think he can nip everyone, this is why im trying to nip it in the bud now. So you think the best bet is to discourage the nipping with a toy, and a firm NO will do the trick?
Thats what ive been doing, and he is calming down a lot so maybe he will get the message.
