Absolutely, its like PRA, HC etc.. eye diseases, clear at 3, 4, 5yrs then affected at 6!! bad news, although there is a gene test I believe now for PRA. I lost a Dobe at 5yrs from Cardiomyopathy, he was working trials 6mths previous. Dawn.
Yes that's right. So would you say the best way to avoid such diseases is to know the breeding and any affected dogs in the lines? For example, could a dog that's passed away without being affected pass on the gene for that particular disease to it's offspring anyway (recessive, is that the word???? :? )? God this is sooooooo off topic! Sorry!
Ripsnorter I want to know this things as well. Anyway it isnt off topic because the the thread is about conditions and diseases prevalent in the DDB.
Im not sure, thats why the Dobermann breed council are running these scans, with a trial drug if they find any dogs in the early stages, they are also trying to lengthen the life span of affected dogs. I lost my dog with it, but his mother and father died of unrelated illness, however his litter sister died of it, so did his grandmother. I think all the info gathered will be good, whatever breed it is, I can only comment on Dobes as I have a vested interest, but as I said I know a guy that has a DDB 4yr male with diagnosed Dilated Cardiomyopathy by a cardiac specialist. Dawn.
That's ok then, was waiting for my handies to be slapped! Ok thanks, seems a pretty impossible predicament then! :-( As far as I know it affects many breeds including GSPs and Bichons, not good. :-(
