Hi Roxy, this is all I could find: Being big, heavy dogs, hip dysplasia is known in the breed and is screened for. Susceptibility To Illness - Low
Only reason Im asking is my OHs friend had a beautiful DDB puppy which he had from 8 weeks and which died in its sleep on Tuesday night at the age of 9 months. According to my OH friend there was no indications of a problem and they just got up to find the dog died. The vet is investigating at this very moment but I was just curious as to whether DDB were high risk or not. Thanx
OMG how awful I really feel for your friend I hope the vey finds out what happened so they at least have some answers!
Oh right sorry to hear that :-( , I'm guessing it could be anything then. If we had not sorted out Roxys Garbage Disease in time, apparently she could have died from shock very suddenly. I'm also sure theres a lot of other situations that could imply this, like drinking White spirit or Ice defroster. Has the vet come to any conclusions?
I know they have serious heart disease in Cardiomyopathy, I have a friend with a 4yr old male who was recently diagnosed, been given a couple months to live. Dogs do die in their sleep of this, a PM should confirm I would imagine. Dawn.
Oh dear, so sorry for your friend, what a tragedy, and such a young baby Have the breeders been informed, maybe they will have an idea?
Hi thanx for all your replies. Im still waiting for Ste to let me know what the vet said. I dont want to push him because hes devastated. I dont even know where he got the puppy in the first place but I will mention to him to try and contact the breeder and to at least let them know.
Possibly the Cardiomyopathy I spoke of Roxy, its a sad fact its in the breed, I hope breeders can do something about it, maybe akin to the Dobermann folk, who's breed suffer with the same disease. Dawn.
Don't want to go off topic, but how would you test for Cardiomyopathy? Really sorry for your friend Roxy, what a horrible thing to have to go through.
You do heart scans, i would imagine a yearly scan would suffice, its what was reccommended to us in the Dobermann survey, fully conscious and uninvasive. Dawn.
So would it still be possible for a dog to develop the condition after it had been bred from, therefore passing it on to the offspring?
