I had a quick read through but couldn't see if this had been answered yet or not, but crossbreeds can be scored officially by the BVA. If you have a look at the latest BVA scores, both Labradoodles and Utonugans are on it Even if the 'breed' isn't registered, you can have the dogs hip scored and you will get an official result back, then when 10 of the 'breed' have been scored they will be added to the list. Agreed, I also think that half the reason people come up with these designer 'names' is to make them sound fashionable and thus earn them more money. I personally dislike the name Huskamute - they are Mal/Sibe crosses and should just be called as such (but then again I don't agree with the name cockerpoos etc either). Interesting comment here - I think in some instances in-breeding can be beneficial (especially if trying to set up a new breed and define a 'type') and so don't agree that cross breeding is better than in-breeding. However if breeders are constantly in-breeding, then I do not think this is right either (and there is very little need to mate dogs that are so close when most breeds have a large gene pool). No you are right, if you want the eyes checked properly then you need to go to an opthamologist (I am just fortunate in that one of our vets is also an opthamologist ). That is a good post Mick and one I completely agree with. Well I know of several good breeders whose Mals live in the house with them. If they live in sterilised runs then I would say they are most likely a commercial breeder Good post Mo Magpye, we aren't getting at you at all - I am sure you girl is a fantastic dog. It is just such a shame to see so called breeders producing these crosses, often with very little consideration given to the health etc.
there ia a lot of snobbery here our Huskamute is a gorgous big lad who's temprament is fantastic. Don't look down on them because you don't like crossbreeds, remember all dogs are really crossbreeds at some point.
Then why stir it by dragging up a post from several months ago (not to mention originally years ago) to post something like that for your first post on the forum?! Maybe you could start your own thread introducing yourself and your "huskamute" before accusing us of snobbery? Welcome to Dogsey.
Well if it's anything like me it's because for some reason this thread comes up pretty much the top of any search done on the word 'huskamute', and we all love to google our doggys don't we? In fact it was how I found Dogsey too... But the longer I have been here the more I have found the dogsey community to be in fact a very supportive and forgiving bunch with the best interests of all breeds at heart. It's hard when you have a new puppy, or a dog you love to bits and then read people seeming to attack them, you immediately leap to their defence. But with time, I'm sure this new poster, as I did will read enough to know and understand where these comments are coming from. Welcome to dogsey ingi. Have a look around, stay for a while and let this thread lie and you will find some fabulous people and amazing dogs.
Reading through the adverts in the Friday-Ad's makes me cringe. Every other advert is for 'Gawjus chunky Staff (or insert name of any other breed) stud, pure bread, gud lukking, 1 yr old, stud fee £500'. I see lots of ads for 'Huskamutes' too...
18 months....been studded once....poor sod sounds like he needs a decent home. Wonder how much they are expecting him to 'make' ETA....didn't realise this was an old thread.
Hi and welcome.... please don't think people here are dog snobs, quite the opposite in fact.... and they are def not against crossbreeds as there are many well loved dogsey dogs who are cross breeds. Cross breeding on purpose, is another matter and I'm not getting into that but if you stick with us you will learn where people are coming from. They are a great bunch, honest! Agree with this one too, as the owner of a NI that too is how I found Dogsey. But again I can now understand why people can make comments about certain breeds or practices, they have more knowledge and any comment made on here is not at any particular dog, we love them all, just maybe the rights and wrongs of how they came to be.
Thats how I found this thread I own a husky x mal. We drove down to Stoke to rescue him from The City Dogs Home after his details were kindly displayed by SHWA UK. He was just under a year old and had been in the centre for months. We traced his breeder and are now doing our utmost to have them shut down. They have a fantastic web site assuring future puppy owners that all parents are health tested and that the dogs can be worked and shown. They even openly admit that they had so many enquiries for blue eyed Mals that they deliberatly cross bred using the husky. They even display a breeding licence from their local council, not for long though since we have contacted their local council ;-) I e-mailed them several time to ask if they could shed any light as to Jacub's parentage since their web site stated they strive to keep all breeding record but recieved no reply. Finally I managed to telephone them and was told "Oh Love, we sell so many puppies we couldn't possibly give you any information about your dog" :-( Jacub is a fantastic boy, sweet natured, responsive and is certainly not confused about who he is, he's a worker ;-) We have 16yrs experience with northern breeds so he's amongst his own. Our concern is always what happens to the guys who end us in homes with inexperienced owners who fell for the designer label! I need to be forgiven but I cringe every time I hear the word 'Huskamute' ! Rant over, thank goodness I found Dogsey Take good care everyone. Seoniad
One thing that struck me is that this poor boy is only 18months and has already been bred from once?? Surely this is too young? Also he lives outside? This poor animal doesnt sound to me like he is someones bleoved pet (IMO)
I had to go and read the original post again. I had completely forgotten what sparked this all off in the first place. Poor boy... Still, so long ago now. He has probably ended up in rescue like poor Santa by now. Unless poor thing did go on to another 'stud home' in which case he's probably still in a cage at the bottom of someone's garden complete with his paddling pool. It's not that he is a 'huskamute' really is it at all. I mean that's sort of where this thread went... 'Designer' cross breeding and all that... But at the heart of it all, it's that anyone would treat any dog this way, designer cross or pure breed. I mean that advert could just as easily read Siberian Husky, or GSD, it's still awful to think these people bought a dog, made it a kennel and a run down the bottom of the garden, made some money using him as a stud, then decided to pass him on, preferably to someone that will continue to use him in the same way. I know it's an old thread, but what a sad story. I wonder whatever happened to him?
Yes , indeed it can and does happen in all breeds. It is a very sad and harsh part of reality that some people look at their dogs as money making machines and little, if anything more
im not sure if you have made enough posts yet to pm? but if you have could you please pm me the breeder details,.
Hello Shona, Don't think I have made enough posts yet. I really should post in the intro section, keep forgetting I've been droppin in on Dogsey for so long I feel as if I know everyone I've learned lots, ranted at the screen during some of the more heated debates and definately laughed a lot When I have made enough posts I will certainly pm you with the details I have Take good care. Seoniad.
Even though only limited information has been given I think any Mal owner could identify the kennels (well any that have been in the breed for a while anyway).
Thank you Greyhawk When we first heard the term 'huskamute' I did an internet search and found a breeder. Since Robert and I are active in siberian rescue we wanted to know if there was any saftey net in place for these 'new guys on the block' since the breed clubs would not them take in. I received a genuinely lovely e-mail back giving me the number of a woman to contact who was a breeder and was working towards starting a 'huskamute' rescue in conjuction with Dogs Trust. Happy that at least something was being done for these guys I got caught up in our own work. Months later we drove down to pick up Jacub from the rescue centre he was in. The name on his vet record seemed familiar and it turned out to be the same lady. So while asking for the imformation about Jacub's parentage I mentioned about the rescue organisation I had been told was to happen. It was blatantly obvious from the conversatin that followed no such rescue would ever exist! I am aware that they have been warned in the past and have been lead to believe that the breeding licence they display was given to them to breed Mals. It is dated 1996 and no checks have been made on the premises since then. Hopefully if I keep pestering their local council will get round to doing what they have been promising to do for months I would like to add ..... Jacub was a really stressed out little lad when he first came out the dogs home but now that he has settled he is the sweetest boy I have came across in a long time. He is a massive mummies boy and I love the big lout dearly We have the best fun together. He truely has stolen my heart My lovely boy [/IMG] Take care Seoniad
I will do Soon as I can I will get the details to you. It would be lovely to have some help on this. Take care Seoniad.
