Siberian Husky off lead walking??? Controversial

If you visit the relevent club sites, rallies are held on an almost weekly basis during the season (october till march).
training is not a problem for most who work their dogs. most of us pay for the privilage of using forestry commission/water authourity/council land by means of a permit and therefore have permission to be where we are, doing what we are, and unlike many dog owners, are also in reciept of both public liability and third party insurace should we cause any damage. we currently have four training sites, so not only do our dogs get quality excersise, they also get a change of scenery too.

......anyone keep a check on doglost?. there have been three huskies and two malamutes reported missing recently (last 4 months) all sadly found dead after venturing on roads or railway lines.
I have a girl here, who aged 4, can no longer engage in harnessed running. Reason???, she bolted from the garden, into the road, and was hit by a car, shattering her pelvis and puncturing her lung. she survived but is now permanenty weakened and faces early arthritis. So?, let them loose volountary?, i dont think so!!

I did actually notice how many Huskies had "escaped" and "run off" while being exercised on Dog Lost, seems this is the main reason for them being on that site at all.

Wait til you see pics of the new flashy purple padded harnesses my crew have just got [ from the TRPD sale ] to match their purple collars and leads [ and in Flukes case his Purple lightweght rain coat and his purple fleece coat ].
Have just ordered some purple longlines from TRPDs fab mega-sale update as well.
And another purple training lead...[ different shades for different moods and all that ]

And when I get around to it I have loads of boxes of purple hair dye sat ready to re-do my mane with

I read that as purple ganglies at first!!! I thought, god poor boys, it's one thing to like purple, but another thing to spray their bits purple!

Not whilst being exercised, most have escaped from home, I wonder how many of those that escaped from home are reguarly exercised off lead.


Since Jan 1999 there are 18 Sibes missing (on doglost), not many really when you compare that figure to other breeds of similar popularity

Some other breeds figure highly through theft, like Staffies etc.. and given the amount of owned Huskies compared to a popular breed like that, the figure is considerable.

Since 2002 there's about 80 Border Terriers missing

You will know that Borders are a target for thieves Anne and have more so been in the last few years, they have been stolen 7 at a time. Whilst you may want to use this as a comparison,. most Borders are stolen, most Huskies have run off or escaped.

Not according to doglost, the majority of Borders on there have run off or escaped. Some have been stolen just like some of the Huskies on there have been stolen. 18 Huskies missing since 1999, 80 Borders missing since 2002. Makes you think doesn't it ;-)

I would not recommend Anne to anyone as a Siberiam Husky breed specialist I would have to say.

There are quite a few persons on this thread that have been in the breed for more years than most would like to admit! Amongst these are CC judges, avid working enthusiast, and pet owners. I would IMHO rate these these people as the specialist and the ones to take note of. I mean no offence to Anne as I believe she thinks she is doing the right thing, although I disaggree as do all of the sibe owners I know.

At the end of the day it does not matter any more as people will and always will make their own minds up on the matter. I just hope they don't regret it. :-(

I, for one, shall have no more to say on the subject as I think this will go in circles forever, unlike a husky! ;-)
