    Anatolian Shephers

Hi everyone!! I love huge dogs so we got an Anatolian shepherd from a local breeder here in Oregon and he is adorable. He is 12 weeks and is very motivated by treats. I have searched online and it seems everyone keeps saying they are not pets but working dogs only and advise strongly against it. All growing up I heard bad things about certain breeds and it was always stressed on the importance of how it was taught and socialized. So why is it different for these guys? Anyone else have an Anatolian and they are a family pet?

    Hey Kory
I hadn’t even heard of this breed so I had to do a bit of research, with that, I can’t give any advice on that breed
I’m not sure if anyone on this site has one, until someone comes forward to help you, have a look at this.....
On this site you can search for the breed and it gives a really good insight, I had a read and from the characteristic trait it seem very similar to what we have...Japanese Akita.
Have a look for yourself and see what you think
Ask your questions on here, there is always someone to help you
If you get chance let’s have a look and him
    Have you chosen a name

My bear Yoji and Malka like this.
Did`nt you research this breed thoroughly before you bought your pup, what did your breeder tell you about the breed, this is a breed that can be described as "primitive" by that I mean its still very much a breed that has its natural basic instincts which are to work alone and protect its flock, they are naturally suspicious of strangers. As with a lot of these "flock guarding breed" they are left alone to think for themselves and protect . so you are going to have to work hard to socialize this pup with people and other dogs to make him a happy canine outside his home.

That does not mean he wont make a good family pet, but his instincts are going to be high to protect, so if you have a busy household this breed needs to be social with all who come to visit.

I have attached a picture and we chose Bruno. I met his mother and she was amazingly calm and so sweet. Not sure of the dad because he was kept up on a hill away from everyone.

I did do the research but as with everything there were positive and negative things from all different people. Some said it was the best dog they ever had. I am going to socialize him as much as possible. Makes it hard when I can't let him away from the house till his next shots the end of this month. My kids have friends over all the time so I plan on using this to my advantage. I was bit by a German shepherd when younger and my husband a pitbull. I also read a lot of the rescue operations for Anatolian are from farmers who saythey were not good at guarding. So it leaves me to think not all are going to fall within a narrow category.

A sweet looking puppy. For a positive view of Anatolians, go to your breed on the Dog Forum, and look at the posts about Sam originating from @Ballybee.

What a great looking pup, I love the name, we had a cat called Bruno
I love your positive attitude towards wanting to socialise him well, it’s a good place to start.. All pups are hard work, but, with time, dedication, consistency and patience you will get the best out of him
I have asked for help & advice on this great site and it has also seen me through some difficult times. Don’t be afraid to ask questions even when things don’t seem to be going well
I’ve just had a quick look on Facebook for you and there are many groups you could join, another great way to enjoy peoples experiences with the same breed

We brought home an Anatolian/Australian Shepherd mix and while the breed's qualities are quite strong (even though a mix) and requiring a good amount of training to keep him out of trouble, Crusoe is turning out to be a great family dog. My mother in law mentioned that a stubborn working breed simply needs a very confident, experienced, firm hand to make a great pet. I had to do a lot of research, and with some learning curves I feel pretty successful. Anyways, I think that is why there is a mixed review of this breed. You definitely have to work hard for the behavior you want.
