Twice in two days, what are the chances of that OFF lead dogs grrrrrrrrrrr. Our first incident was last night. On one of our walks we went past a business premises that was guarded by 2 dogs, they got so rattled as we passed, no idea how as the wall is so high ( I personally think that by chance the dog scrabbled on top of the other dog ) anyway it lunged over the top an ran and attacked Yoji straight away. It was awful Yoji stood his ground and the dog actually ran off. We came home and I had a stiff drink. Today, on a nice walk nearly got home and a dog and a dog came running at us, the owner shouting it and calling it off, it sniffed around Yoji and my husband was trying to reverse slowly, but, the dog started growling an the fight began. My hubby was pulling Yoji off by the lead and owner went ' hands in ' no lead - no collar ' a braver man than me It's a horrible thing to witness, I can't believe in his short life he has been attacked by 4 times by OFF LEAD dogs, we do try to keep away when we see them but when they come chasing him it's not easy Let's hope our next walk is ' boring '
Poor Yoji - but as long as he was not hurt or distressed then just thank crunchie because it could have been much worse. But twice in two days is not nice and not fair on him to expect him not to try to retaliate. I have had, and still have, trouble with dumped dogs, dogs that are just let roam loose, and dogs that people on the Moshav that are only taken out on a Friday evening or on Shabbat - most are on leads but some are not, and even those on leads try to pull away from their owners to get in my yard because Tikva barks at them. And the off-lead ones that do get into the yard get my fishwife act, both at the dog and the owner, once I am able to grab my crutches to get outside. Pereg was badly hurt once by a loose dog that came into the yard, requiring an emergency visit by the vet then on emergency duty, wound flushing and stapling, although she probably hurt the dog back. The next one who tried went off screaming.
So sorry, poor Yoji. Annoying when you are trying to be so careful with his socialisation. No doubt his double coat protected him from injury. Off lead dogs are bad enough, but to have no collar to get a hand onto really is thoughtless.
I thought it was illegal to not put a collar on a dog when it is out? It is here, which is why I can distinguish between the dumped dogs and just dogs who are allowed to roam free. Well mostly, because some of those do not wear collars and those that do rarely have address tags on them. Also illegal. The problem is that too many people just do not care and do not think about other dogs or people.
Ah Carole, my husband and I talked after about his double coat and double chin ( lol ) help against injuries. I just worry about the psychological affect it has. Also, as annoying as it is I worry about the other dogs, as things happen so quickly and we want to get away we don't know if he injured them
Philippa - Yoji was wearing a collar and was on a leash. This latest dog was not on a leash nor was he/she wearing a collar. Therefore whether Yoji injured him/her or not is not your responsibility. It is the responsibility of the irresponsible owner. So please do not worry about other dogs who attack Yoji - as long as he is not harmed that is the important thing. Whether it will have any psychological effect on him - I do not think it will, but it might make him even more wary of loose dogs or any dogs coming up to him when he does not want them to do so.
I agree with Malka. Leashed, you had your dog under control, and it was not him that instigated the contact. The unleashed dog is the one that was out of control. When they happen, these incidents put us on edge and really spoil our walks. Just carry on giving other dogs as much space as possible, and either let him sit to one side, or do the Watch Me game while they pass. Hopefully, he will quickly forget about it.
How old is Yoji? If, as I suspect, he is still a pup, try to get him around some dogs you know to be friendly so that he can get some positive experiences. Poor lad, with four attacks, he will no doubt start to get worried if you can't get some positive associations in there for him
Hiya, Oh no, poor Yoji. It is indeed illegal for your dog not to wear a collar whilst in a public place. The answer is if you can't keep your dog under control let it off when there is no-one around. GRRRRRR. Makes me so angry. Hope he's not to bashed up. Jane xx
