Hello everyone, New on here and I'm Looking for a little advise... I have an 11 week Alaskan malamute boy called Cody. First dog owned from a puppy. Cody is a great dog, but myself and my girlfriend are having some problems with his biting. Now we've been using the time out calm technique, his bursts of biting are usually At play and in the evening and if you tell him no he just tries even harder to bite. Gets quite grumpy grisly and it's generally I think testing his position in our pack. Just wondering if anyone's got any tips or advise for this even though he is young we don't want this to become a bigger problem later on when he's obviously bigger and bite inhibition will be a problem. Our pup was a total pest when we ever tried to use the "puppy yelp" or just a stern NO, always seemed to foster more active biting and play. Time outs worked extremely well, more effective if we got up and left rather than moving her out to another room. Turning our backs just didnt cut it, had to be right out through a baby gate or door......having said that turning away and just ignoring her is currently working an absolute charm on her jumping up to greet people. Im sure we read an article on dogtime website on bite inhibition which was fairly useful. Is your pup sleeping enough, i know i have banged on about this in other threads but i still to this day am stunned by how different a LOT of sleep made to all aspects of Everest's behaviour.
Hi Alan, Thank you for your reply. Cody seems to have enough sleep, he's in quite a good routine 9pm till 6am he will sleep strait though the night not a peep. Then he will have 2-3x 2-3 hours of sleep during the day in between play times. If he hasn't had enough sleep he is worse so I can understand that tiredness effects his ability to think things through sometimes. See our time out we have been physically removing him from the room and putting him in his play area/living space and take away his toys. Maybe us leaving the room would work better as I don't want him to associate being picked up means bad things. He's had a mix up with his vaccinations and we've had to start again which means walking is a problem and socialisation at a puppy class is on hold for a few more weeks. At what age did you start seeing a difference using your techniques? We've had him nearly 4 weeks now and I understand he's still young and learning but just want to make sure we are doing everything right for him to be a great dog.
Probably within 2-3 weeks for any consistent change, sometimes it seemed to be remarkable after 1 time, others took a 100 reps to make a spot of difference. I think my wife and I remarked she was "definitely better" after 2-3 weeks. As i may have mentioned before in other threads we were absolutist in terms of what was allowed in regards to biting, meaning absolutely never. Teeth touch skin = her/us out for 2-3 minutes. No exceptions, not during play, not accidentally, not letting it slip if it was done softly etc We are bearing the fruit of that amount of work for sure now.
Thank you for your advise, the local socialisation classes have a meeting before you bring your pets so I will definitely check it out before.
