A Mastiff/Greyhound mix bitch has been imported from Gammonwood Mastiffs in New South Wales, Australia. To a Holland Irish WolfHound Kennel for a new backcross breeding program, as long as all health tests and screening is passed. The goal is to improve health , soundness and longevity. The original purpose was to backcross at Gammonwood, with Mastiffs there. This with the Mastiff I'll hold my opinion on since, I don't want to start a Tobin Jackson debate. Not really up on IWH, thought I would see what the opinions are about it.
So they want to do this to improve health in the Irish Wolfhound? They can only do this by bringing in a Mastiff/Greyhound?
The Brozi, Great Dane, Scottish Deerhound, and English Mastiff are what was used to bring back the modern IWH. Grey hounds are known for soundness, so not that big a stretch.
Why mastiff cross greyhound?with Irish wolfhound? Why? Totally goes against a lurched mix.your never sure what traits from what dog your going to get.mixing gone wrong in my opinion.health soundness and longevity is all in gods hands.
That makes some sense then. Why not Borzoi? I don't know much about them, but if the health is right. I would like to know the outcome of this back crossing though. I don't think lurcher type are that much different than any other mix / type. We can't have complete control when breeding, that is for sure. However, if health, soundness and longevity were all in God's hands there would be no point to selectively breed nor any difference between a well bred dog and that of generation of careless breeding.
