Someone as forgotten to tell my dogs they are JRT's

My dogs just totally ignored a injured rabbit in field this morning, the rabbit was dragging itself across the field, when it saw my 6 dogs running about it froze, my dogs looked up saw rabbit then continued playing tag with each other.

Now according to all the JRT/PRT books that I have read, these dogs were bred for hunting, plus according to the books they can't live with cats, rabbits and small furries, lets me think oh yes I have 3 cats, 4 giant rabbits & 6 rats.

The old saying of never judge a book by its cover also applies to dogs. "Never judge a dog by its breed"
The rabbit eventually made it to its warren & disappeared, I don't know who was more stunned the rabbit or old couple walking through field, when my dogs ignored the rabbit.

Witty would never have ignored a rabbit - he'd have gone up to it and tried to make friends. To the best of our knowledge he was three quarter JRT and one quarter Yorkshire Terrier. He was completely trustworthy with our rats, and the cockatiel adored him!

Gertie the lurcher was trained (not by me!) to chase and kill rabbits, but it would seem she had also been trained to ignore squirrels and cats, and she was also safe with our rats.

I don't have any rats now and won't be getting any more - there's no way I would trust Chico the Chihuahua with any little creatures - he has the killer instinct! The wild birds in the garden have had some narrow escapes but spiders, beetles etc have not been so lucky.

Would anyone with small furries please tell me that Tikva is supposed to - umm - catch them?

I am oh so fed up with these mice.

Yes little Chihuahua's are very good as killing beetles, flys, moths, butterflies, bee's, wasps, hornets, spiders, ladybugs & birds, think it must be a size thing with them, as Chihuahua's just don't realize just how small they are, as they love to play with the big dogs.

Cats are good at catching mice lol
No good asking K9 as he lifted his paws up other day when a field mouse ran across the garden in front of him.

    You and me both!

There's a field mouse that's been resident in my kitchen for months now and whatever I do I can't get rid of it. It nibbles plastic containers and any food that I've left out by mistake and is particularly partial to butter and chocolate biscuits.

I always thought that Schnauzers were terriers and catching small furries would be right up their street, but Gwylim obviously isn't aware of this fact and Georgina couldn't care less so long as it doesn't sleep on her bed.

Now if it had been Chloe she wouldn't have rested until she had tracked the mouse down and killed it and most likely would have buried its body under my duvet!

I can report that Cavaliers and Lowchen ignore mice too. Tweed was obsessed with field mice, and would swallow them alive, (Ugh!) Beagles seem to be attracted by movement, and enjoy the chase, but I haven't seen them attack anything - yet.

But I had a cat and she used to sit and watch the meecicles.

Just one mouse? I think I have hundreds and not just in my kitchen. I do not leave any food out - even potatoes, onions and garlic are kept in the refrigerator.

But they eat candles, soap [although I use liquid soapless soap but do have "proper" soap around] and what the 'eck they think they are doing in my bedroom - correct, bed, I do not know.

And did not someone once tell me that Dachshunds are meecicle killers?

    Someone should tell IT that.

Probably since they live with small animals they are socialized and habituated to them.

My little girl did show interest in the local wildlife but a few simple "no" commands and she doesn't bother any more. If anything with fur or feathers dares to come into her gardens though, it's a different matter, they're fair game to her. But just look at her face, can you imagine her being anything other than a little sweetheart.
