    Windows 10

So a week or so back I received an invitation to upgrade to Windows 10 - free of charge - whereas when it is officially out it will have to be bought. Being assured that it was a full copy not just an upgrade [or update or whatever] I sat on the invitation for a while.

I mean I am perfectly happy with Windows 7 Ultimate so why would I want to change? And unfortunately I cannot get hold of Effie for some unknown reason so I could not ask his advice.

About a week ago I thought what the... having checked on Google how to change back to Windows 7 if I did not like W10... so when I got the daily message I decided OK, give it a try. And day after day I got a message that something [what?] was wrong or missing so very sorry but you cannot have W10.

Until... yesterday it seems I did something right and I now have W10. Bottom line all looked funny, new things added, but apart from "I'm Cortana. Ask me anything." and some other odd looking things, but they did say what they were when I hovered the mouse over them.

Fine, until I wanted to put my PC to sleep and could not find the Off [or Start] button.

Ah, try the Windows logo on the left-hand corner - and lots of tile things appeared. HELLUP - what do I do now? Well, the obvious of course. Click on each one and see what happened!

The windows symbol in bottom left hand corner (the start menu icon), right click (as opposed to left click when on windows 7) and the usual stuff comes up on the menu

I was also offered the free version of windows 10 but decided not to install it as I've heard so many people seem to have had problems with it. I'm quite happy with my windows 8.

So far it seems OK although I think it has too much on it. Well, far more than I need. A lot seems to be for phones/tablets/Xbox etc and things I have never heard of, but the programs I use are as they were.

Oh well, I can always change back to W7 so am not over worried that things might go wrong.

I have not noticed - yet - any difference with speed. As for my PC freezing - I guess I will have to wait and see.

Have had it on my laptop for coming up a couple of months. No problems at all. Hubby has it on his computer too and that's the same.

We did try to put it on an older AMD laptop and it was a disaster. Although it said it was compatible for the upgrade, it was far from it and had to revert that one back to Windows 7.

We put it on for the simple reason that Microsoft will offer longer support for Windows 10 rather than the older Windows 8 so, if you like, we are future proofing as much as is possible with technology

I know that when Effie was Beta testing Windows 10 some time ago he warned me that Microsoft will not be supporting W7 much longer and that W10 would be much better.

I do wish I could get hold of him now but his telephone is not even on voicemail now, so I am rather concerned and I have a query about something. But I can always telephone Microsoft Israel who are extremely helpful, with techies who speak fluent English, so I will probably call them tomorrow.

I much prefer Windows 10. Windows 8 nearly drove me to insanity.

I have just spoken to a techie at Microsoft Israel who told me what to do - just two clicks needed!

One thing he did say was that people who find their computer running slow or freezing on Windows 10 should go to the apps and delete all those that they do not need. I had already done that as I do not like unnecessary clutter on my computer.

I never experienced W8 [or Vista] - I started with XP, then changed to W7 - now W10. I just hope I do not have any problems with it.

So did I, which is why before I downloaded W10 I checked how to go back to W7, although W10 is basically is the same, just with extras for people who want/need them, which I do not. I think I will stick with it unless I have problems.

OH is updating his Win 8 to Win 10 as we speak. I have Win 7, - as I don't do anything adventurous, I am going to stick with it.
I will have to learn it someday, when I have update my laptop, but lots of people will be able to help me by then!

I saw that I can go to Windows 7 even though mine was a Windows 8 lol. I do still have a windows 7 machine but no use for it. Actually still have one with Vista that I haven't fired up in ages, you can imagine it is outdated but one day I will have time to get everything backed up from the hard drives.

I was interested in which version of W10 I now have, so had a look at Google. This is the part that interested me.

    Windows 7
    • Those of you who currently run Windows 7 Starter, Windows 7 Home Basic or Windows 7 Home Premium will be upgraded to Windows 10 Home.
    • Those of you running Windows 7 Professional or Windows 7 Ultimate will be upgraded to Windows 10 Pro.
    Windows 8.1
    • Those of you running Windows 8.1 (the standard edition) will receive Windows 10 Home. And those of you running Windows 8.1 Pro or Windows 8.1 Pro for Students will receive Windows 10 Pro.
    • On the mobile phone side, if you're running Windows Phone 8.1, you'll get Windows 10 Mobile as your free upgrade.

The following might also be of interest for anyone thinking of getting W10 now.
    - - -
There are some caveats and conditions with the free upgrade.

If you're using Windows 7, you must be running Service Pack 1 in order to receive the free upgrade. Windows 7 Service Pack 1, or SP1, has been available as an update since 2011, so you should already have it installed. To check, click the Start button in Windows 7, right-click the setting for Computer. Click Properties from the popup menu. The screen to View basic information about your computer should list Service Pack 1. If not, you can download it directly from Microsoft's Download Center.

If you're still running Windows 8.0, you'll have to upgrade to Windows 8.1 to get Windows 10 for free. To check this, open the Apps screen, scroll or swipe to the right of the screen until you see a tile for "This PC." Right-click that tile and click Properties from the popup menu. The screen to View basic information about your computer should list Windows 8.1. If not, you can upgrade to 8.1 by launching the Windows Store app where the 8.1 update should still be waiting for you.

My first computer was an Compaq Windows 95 dead easy to use, no wifi or wireless networks no wireless printers/scanners, games were frog, space invaders, pacman & cards.

Now computers are wireless networks wireless internet wifi cloud wireless printing, high graphic games plus don't even have to be home to print a photo can be done by mobile :100:

Now I have a Windows 7 Acer computer with all these wireless features (never touched them so don't know what they actually do) & all I do on it is go on my email address, Facebook eBay Amazon here & other pet sites
