    Laptop

My son has just bought himself a laptop, confident that he could set it up himself but knowing that, if he couldn't, we could call on our usual guy.

However, he can't connect it to our wi fi - it's asking for something like a 'network security key' and we haven't a clue where to find it. And it turns out our computer genius is away in the States for several weeks.

Anyone got any ideas what exactly it is we're looking for?!

Janet, I'm far from being an expert, but is it the password, (numbers and letters), of your broadband router? We are on BT, and ours sits in a little slot behind the router. If not, I'm sure someone better informed will sort him out.

Wi fi key is the security numbers/letters password you're given by your internet supplier

My PC has a router supplied by my IP. It says it is wireless but is not, however Effie brought me a wireless thingy and wotsisname from the macolet gave Effie his code so I could use his wireless from his laptop if necessary. I do not know the code but it is now connected to my PC in case my IP router boogers up and I just have to plug it in to use it.

Actually I have two spare routers from my IP and know how to connect them and set them up if necessary, but - I am considering getting a laptop although I am not sure if I really need one.

I just have the need to have internet connection and as I refuse to buy a smart phone or a tablet, I reckon a laptop would be the best thing for me.

    Maybe.

It's the number that should be on the back of your wireless router (BT, Sky box etc)

@Malka Since I bought a tablet, I only switch the laptop on for downloads or printing. The predictive text is a bit annoying, I wish it wouldn't keep changing my words to what it thinks I mean. I have to subedit everything or it would be (even more) gibberish.

Thanks for all your replies folks. I've now found a number on the bottom of the wireless router (Netgear) so I'll get my son to try that.

I daren't try it myself - as you will have gathered, I am totally useless with technology and I am very grateful to all you helpful people!

Janet if there are any issues let me know I can walk him there it even if he need to log into the admin side of your route to find it, or finding the properties menu in another device to find it.

It's simply your WiFi password. Have you got it connected yet?

Not yet - he's away now for a couple of days so I am going to leave it to him to sort out when he gets back.

    I'll keep you posted!
