The first thing you do when you have a new puppy/dog is to teach the puppy/dog basic commands sit/wait/heel but specially the RECALL command. Today I came across 7 owners chasing after & yelling to their dogs to come back, I just muttered idiots under my breath & called K9, Skye & Ziva back, put their leads back on & was just about to walk back home, when one of the owners screamed at their dog to get back, (sorry to say I rolled my eyes) I turned round & said having problems, they said yes its first time their dog been out & off lead (12 week old apricot Poodle) I said ok did he come back when you were training at home, their reply "oh no we not done any training with him as this is only his first time out" I unclipped my 3 dogs told them to go play, (should say it was raining heavy now & was not happy about getting wet) then I went sat on bench & chucked some stilton towards the pup & called him just the once, then I chucked another & another piece of stilton until pup was by feet then I quickly picked up the pup praising him all the time & handed him back to his owners. Why can't owners keep their dogs on leads until they have mastered recall is beyond me, if they can't master recall then buy a running/training lead so they still can have a run about, without the risk of them running off.
Do you not have leash laws where you live? 7 owners! It's just ignorance. So many people are not up on dog training or the proper way to go about it. A dog shold not be off leash without solid recall. I'm glad you were able to help the poodle owner. I hope you took a lil bit of time to educate them even though it was pouring out.
Most people bring home the cute puppy and just cuddle it. There clueless about starting the basics and crate training, while waiting for the final round of shots. Kinda like the wife holding Mouse on her lap from 8 weeks till he was almost 5 months, and now that he is over 175lbs, she gripes when he jumps up on her lap.
Yes & No dogs can go off leads in the dog areas of the park, but must be on leads around the children's play areas & football pitches, but you be surprised at the amount of owners let their dogs off that are not recalled trained. There is one owner that as 4 Rottweiler's who range from 7 months to 6 years old & not one of them is recall trained, yet their owner lets all 4 off their leads at the same time, then spends the next hour screaming at them to come back to him, its the same with the young black Labrador (I have had runs in with his owner because the dog comes flying across the park & jumps up on to you) he's always off his lead & his owner chases after him yelling "he's friendly he's friendly its ok he just wants to play with your dog but my Evil One is not dog friendly & don't like other dogs invading her personal space.
Well it's not always black and white, Figo had a brilliant recall when he was a puppy, started training as soon as he came home, but now at 19 mths of age it's as if I never did any training at all, if he sees a dog he is off and completely ignores me....the apron strings are well and truly broken. You have to start recall from very early on, and continue to work throughout their life , because there will be times they just say...up yours !!
Wow you'd think the owner of the Rotts would learn. How can that be anything but hectic & stressful to chase your dogs around. I can't stand people like that honestly. My dogs are not friendly either, even those which are that doesn't mean they want some strange dog running up to them. Proper introduction is best with my dogs. Just because someone has a friendly dog it doesn't mean the other dog is friendly. Besides that even if I'm without dogs I meet this type of owner like I want to be jumped on & scratched by their usually untrained dogs with no manners.
My Evil One (Dottie) hate dogs that come pelting towards her & will tell them so, first its the stand followed by the growl then she will snarl at them, this will stop most dogs but not the young Labrador, it will pounce on her given half the chance, that's why I put a slip lead on him & march him back to his owner. I know "teenage" dogs (18-24 months old) go through their deaf stages & they will ignore basic commands, same as an intact male dog when he picks up scent of bitch in season, but the dogs that the 7 owners have, have never been trained at all, they are out of control & so are their owners, they know their dogs don't come back when called, yet still let them run free.
I'm on the other end of the scale, Mouse loves all dogs, but he will not stand DA dogs. He has had GSD's try to attack him 3 times when he was younger 6 to 9 months, and when he was around 10 to 11 months a AM Staff attacked him, and they tried to get me to pay the vet bill, for the AM Staff. So he only gets play dates with friends dogs, and loose on private property. (Before anyone think he dogs not get a ton of interaction with other dogs, he plays with Waldo and Lulu everyday, and Goes to Petsmart and bone in Fido weekly.)
Dottie as heart problem & the vet thinks this is why she don't want other dogs near her, its the same at home when she's having one of her "leave me alone" moods she will go for Ziva her sister so we have to remove her straight away & put her in a crate just to stop the others from bugging her.
