Dog abandoned at Ayr station with belongings in suitcase

    _80087089_80087082.jpg

An animal charity is attempting to trace the owner of a dog that was abandoned at a railway station with its belongings in a suitcase.
The male Shar-Pei crossbreed was discovered tied to a railing outside Ayr station on 2 January.
The suitcase included the dog's pillow, toy, food bowl and food.
The Scottish SPCA traced a previous owner through the dog's microchip but were told it was sold in 2013 to someone they did not have details for.
Inspector Stewart Taylor said: "The dog is micro-chipped and we were able to find out his name is Kai.
"We contacted the owner registered to the microchip, who stated they had sold Kai on Gumtree in 2013.
    'Cruel incident'
"Unfortunately they could not tell us the address of the person who bought him."
Insp Taylor said the case highlighted the potential consequences of selling an animal online.
He said buyers often included people acting on impulse who knew very little about animals.

He added: "Regardless of the fact Kai was left with his belongings, this was still a cruel incident and we are keen to identify the person responsible.
"If anyone can help we would ask them to get in touch as soon as possible.
"Kai is around two to three years old and is a lovely dog with a nice nature. We will look after him until we can find him a permanent and loving home."
The charity reminded pet owners that abandoning an animal is an offence under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006.

Poor boy, I hope he's soon settled and happy. After National publicity, I believe that there have been hundreds of offers to rehome Kai. You would think that someone would have recognised him, and named his owner. He looks so calm and well cared for, I suspect there might be a sad story behind his abandonment.

@Malka thanks for some reason I can't get the BBC news link up xx

We at The Rescue Home think the name that's registered with microchip is still the owner & they made story up saying they have sold him.

How sad, he does look as if he’s been well cared for and must be so confused.
Im not convinced the original owners are telling the truth sold the dog and don't want him back sounds better than just dumped him at the rail station. could be my cynical mind but it isn't that uncommon a story

Just proves how useless the MC really is in cases like this.

I get alerts when anything in the media is reported - not just in the UK but throughout the world. Both for the News Section on Dogsey and also interesting stories for my thread on Dogsey

    http://www.dogsey.com/showthread.php?t=191001

So I do not need anything else on the computer - if an alert comes through it gives the link, and the first link I posted had come through. The BBC one still has not but I found it on their online news wotsit.

I just have to sort through each alert to see which are interesting for either the News Section or the other thread.

Poor boy! I read on another forum that he had infected eyes which could be the reason for him being abandoned because although well cared for maybe his owners couldn't afford the necessary treatment. Shar-Pei and SP crosses are high maintenance dogs healthwise and some companies won't insure them. I know how much it cost me just to get Georgina's eyes fixed and vet's fees in Hungary are only a third of what they are in the UK. Pei are wonderful dogs and bless him, I hope he finds a loving forever home.

Sometimes I wish I was right there so I could take the dog home and just love it to death.

There are so many people using food banks to feed their families these days, and I have been told that it can cost £40 - £50 to sign over a dog to a rescue centre. (Is this true Tina?). Is it any wonder that some people feel they can't cope with another mouth to feed, and are tempted to abandon their dogs? I suspect that Kai's owners, whoever they are, must be so distressed to have had to do this.

As I suspected Kai has entropion which is common in Shar-Pei and can only be cured by surgery. And he could also have ulcerated corneas due to the eyelashes scratching and irritating the eyes which will require antibiotics in the form of eyedrops several times a day. All of which costs money which maybe his previous owners didn't have!

@Pork1epe1 - luckily the Scottish SPCA now have the money, thanks to the people who donated to their Just Giving page, for Kai to have the surgery. And there are so many people who want to adopt him that I am sure they will make sure that they will get the proper forever home for him once he has gotten over the surgery.

So hopefully there will be a happy ending for him before too long.

With Kai being trained and loving I have to think that maybe his owners were so overwhelmed they thought he would be better off anywhere but with them. Besides I can't imagine anyone but a caring owner tieing a dog to a suitcase full of his belongings. This person must be very sad to have had to do this.
