Hi Help needed please I am a first time owner of a JR and she is approaching her 1st birthday in Oct this year. She is a very affectionate dog and loves to snuggle and cwtch with me but is also very stubborn (are dogs like there owners lol). I have a few problems with her that I don't know how to address. 1. Darts off when in the garden at the slightest noise or if she sees someone/something. 2. Wont come to her name any more. 3. Has a very short attention span and gets distracted and then forgets about going to the toilet. 4. Trying to clicker train her but every time I use it she runs a mile and wont take a treat. Am completely lost and don't know what to do. Any and all advice appreciated on the above. Thanks Cheryl
Hi Cheryl, your JR is still a pup so training sessions should be kept relatively short. Give it time, as things will one day just 'click' and you'll both understand each other better - just be consistent and keep at it. Here are some Dogsey articles that may be of help: Puppy training: When to start - what to do Training recall We have some JRT owners here, so hopefully they will add their thoughts too
Have you had her from being a baby, and is this a recent change in behaviour? ..... Or have you only acquired her recently?
You need to go back to puppy training again, start off by putting her on a long training lead [even in garden] call her name once & if she just ignore you gently but firmly pull the lead & when she returns go OTT with praise, repeat this couple of times [anymore then couple times & she will get bored] Give her a toilet commend can be any word you want, {I use go wee & be quick} again go OTT with praise as soon as she goes. You have a JRT so forget the clicker, get her attention by using her favourite toy, wave the toy in front of you to get her attention, then give the Sit, Stay, Down commends [say commends firm but gently] then again go OTT with praise as soon as she does what you want.
Hi Carole, yes I have had coco from 8 weeks old and i'd say it has been the last 2 -3 months her behaviour is changing. She has had one season also. Hi Tina, I have started putting her back on the long lead when we go out in the garden but she goes back and forth from the steps to the ramp avoiding the lawn in the middle I have covered the gate to stop her barking at it and although this is working it doesn't stop her from wanting to go up the steps to it. I have had a toilet word from the beginning it's "go wee wee" and she will go on command when not distracted. I hadn't thought of using her toy so will try that as she is not food orientated in the slightest . Does the T stand for terrier? I think it is possibly my fault as well as I got a bit lacking on the praise (due to family accident and have a busy time of it) and noticed so have started to give lots of praise again. She's loves her raw hide chews and hides them all over the house and has started to bring them to me so we are doing "Ta" at the momment, she gives them to me and I give her lots of praise and give them back
Coco is adorable! Is her big "pillow" also yours? I love the photo of Coco using him/her as a pillow!
Hi Malka, Yes Roony is mine too He was unwanted by his owner so we bought him, we have had him now for about 3 years. So think he is about 6 years old but not 100% sure. He was in a terrible state when we first got him, fur all dull and full of dandruff and his ears were all leathery and ragged, had no muscle mass and uncontrollable thirst. As you can see from the photo he is a different dog now Coco is spoilt as she gets to sleep on the bed with us and each night I find her snuggling in to my arm with her head near the pillow She's a cheeky monkey but so affectionate
Roony is a handsome fellow - I was not sure if he was a he or a she as Coco was obscuring his "plumbing"! My lump of a Pereg sleeps on my bed although as she considers it hers I end up with just a small corner of it! No head on the pillows though - that is a definite no-no, but she does not care as once she has had her nightly mantra and cuddle she springboards over me and ends up with her rear end towards me - gradually edging me further and further over. Little Booga! I do not really spoil her though... and I can hardly keep her out of the bedroom and off my bed not that I want to, as there is something reassuring in knowing that she is always close to me.
What lovely dogs you have. Tina has given you some good advice, and she really knows this breed. I would just like to add that at the 'teenage' stage, dogs often have a lapse in their training. I think the best way through it is to stay cheerful, be consistent, and be ready to reward (as Tina says OTT) as soon as she shows signs of coming to you. You don't need to use a clicker box if she doesn't like the sound. I use the word 'Yes' to instantly mark good behaviour, the timing of the rewarding play or tug is not as critical, but should always follow when you have given her a 'Yes'.
Thanks Carole She is already starting to show progress as I implemented the tips above immediately, can't thank you all enough xx
Just watch her in house just in case she as found a place to go wee inside, she as probably already gone wee several times in that place & thinks that's where she should be going all the time.
