Need your help, we have a Red Setter type dog running free for pass 4 days we are not sure what type of Setter or sex yet, as it bolts as soon as anyone goes near it, we have set traps up but they have been set off we think by the homeless people so they can eat the food in the traps. There as been no reports of anyone loosing a Setter locally so am asking you if there as been any reports of a lost Setter where you all live, has we are now thinking along the lines that its been stolen & either been dumped or escaped from the people that stolen the dog. The dog is young we think around 14/18 months old, as white blaze down chest, can jump over walls/fences without any problem & is very fast, when we first saw the dog its coat was in excellent condition, but is now looking scruffy.
Petlog, police & vets all been contacted plus other rescue homes, we did have email photos of 3 lost setters non look like this one. The dog wardens are going to try using catch poles again today if dog not in any of the traps.
The poor dog must be terrified. I hope he/she is caught soon so can be looked after until his/her owner is found. Hopefully due to a microchip. I know when out local dog catchers tried for weeks to catch two dogs who "lived" under the house next door to where I was living, in the end Dr Vadim [the Local Authority Vet] had to use a tranquiliser gun so someone could get into the crawl space and bring the dogs out. But at least they had a "home" of sorts, and the dog catchers had been leaving food out for them in the hope of catching them. Vadim was the last resort when they could not be caught.
Would it come if you had another calm dog with you might come to the other dog hope you have luck catching it.
Any news? We've had a terrible thunderstorm here, with thunder and lightning, and I hoped it wasn't the same where you are as the poor thing would have been terrified.
Yes & no - yes we know the dog as not been stolen or escape (lost) now & dog is a 16 month old Male called Dexter he's a Irish Setter X Retriever, we been told he's been turfed out by his owners son as he can't be bothered to go round each day to feed/let him out, owners have gone on holiday. No we not managed to catch him yet, but they are resetting traps tonight & taking it in turns to watch the traps.
I agree. I wonder where you got that information from,I would think you would have to be a complete idiot to do that to your parents dog. I would assume given you have been told this the person who gave it to you knows the son and family involved, so why doesn't the dog warden ( or however ) go and speak to him.
What we know so far is : local radio broadcast that a setter had been found, someone phoned radio station up saying they think they know who's dog it is, radio station relays information to RSPCA (they the ones who contacted radio station) RSPCA goes to speak to neighbour of owners of dog, they say they on holiday & their son was looking after dog, but as not been around for last few days nor as they heard the dog, RSPCA goes to see son, from what we been told, he tells the RSPCA he was working nights so gave the dog extra food to last over night / next day & when he went back the following afternoon to let dog out he had gone toilet in house & been sick all over house, son was angry so open door & let dog out, he told the RSPCA he's got his own life & was not going to keep going round to feed & let dog out each day when he's been working all night. What happens now I don't know as the RSPCA as taken over catching the dog.
Poor Dexter, what a sad story. The son must have really frightened him. It doesn't sound as if anyone cared very much about how the dog would cope while they were away.
What a horrible thing to do - but I think the parents are also to blame for going away and leaving poor Dexter, with no guarantee that their son would look after him properly. I hope the poor frightened dog is soon caught and in safe hands.
If it had been found by someone how come its running loose ?? I cant see why the RS contacted the radio as they do not go round collecting strays, that’s what Dog Wardens are for. QuoteThe police no longer have responsibility for accepting or dealing with stray dogs. The responsibility for the catching and safe-keeping of stray dogs is with the local authority. The RSPCA and other animal charities cannot pick up or accept healthy stray dogs. http://www.rspca-rochdale.org.uk/stray-dogs.php
I find it very odd that if everyone knows who`s dog it is,and the RSPCA have made contact with the owners son, why they don't just get him to go and get the dog
Latest update The Rescue Home as is: The son is now saying dog shot out when he opened door ? He said he spent 4 hours looking for Dexter on day he got loose ? Son is saying the dog is a runner & is nervous of people Son & RSPCA are trying to catch dog together ? Now the dog being a runner & nervous does make sense & could be the real reason to why no one can catch him but who knows what we do know is owners are due home on Wednesday.
Why would anyone leave a dog alone in a house to go on vacation? I get getting someone to stay at the house while gone if the dog is nervous or there are more pets that are more difficult to move to a sitter but to just up and leave? I don´t get that. I really hope you guys manage to get him and he gets taken care of. Poor baby
UPDATE Dexter is in the care of the RSPCA now. The Rescue Home received a phone call from the RSPCA thanking the owner of rescue home for use of traps & we can collect them whenever we want, (traps don't belong to us they are the Nottingham dog wardens traps) the RSPCA have said Dexter seems ok just needs a good grooming.
I do so hope that Dexter is never in such a horrid situation again. If his "owners" do not want him I hope he finds a loving forever home. And I thank everyone who managed to find and catch the poor boy. xx
