If you ever fancy a takeaway, whether delivered or just bought and brought in, what would be your choice as to the type. And what would you be prepared to pay for a one-person meal, whether it was delivered or you had to get someone to bring it in for you?
My first choice would be a lovely cooked dinner - but that's not going to happen So... I think a Pizza Price would depend on whether it was a rare treat (so willing to pay more) or something regular (where cost would need to be considered). If you are thinking about meals for yourself Malka, there are some easy meals to make that perhaps you could get made in a batch, then you simply need to add to something like couscous. This is one I make in a batch, and the couscous then only takes 5 minutes to do - just add boiling water! http://www.over50sforum.com/showthread.php?t=3194
Indian but these days we've cut right back on takeaways so I cook from scratch or if in a hurry use a cook in sauce such as Pataks or Sharwoods and it's done in no more time than it takes a takeaway to deliver. Price would be dependant on what I'm ordering tbh. I prefer quality to cheap though.
I have never had a take away other than fish and chips (cooked in hot fat so germs are killed), I make my own pizza, curry or Chinese so I know what is in them . It is easy to make a batch of pizza dough and freeze it likewise curry, stir fries take just minutes to prepare. When I worked at Collage the girls in our house ordered lots of takeaways, they looked and smelt horrible and I was amazed how much they cost.
Apart from pizza places galore [and like Meg I can make my own, ditto curry/Chinese etc which are not available here, and fish and chips being unknown] there are various burger joints [no thanks] but they do not deliver out of town even though I actually live closer than many places actually in town... ...and no frozen ready meals available... ...and I suddenly remembered my first and last visit back to the UK when I stayed for a few days with my son. Must have been around May 1991 as it was just after Passover following the Gulf War and just before his 21st birthday. He rented a huge house with two of his friends and just about everywhere were takeaway menus from, well, just about everywhere. When I asked if any of them either cooked, the joint answer was "why should we when we can get all this delivered for just a telephone call." But - if I had something like Wiltshire Farm Foods available here, and if I could afford it, I wonder if I would also feel as those youngsters did?
Curry. We treat ourselves on birthdays etc. They recognize my voice now when I ring up to place an order!
I cook most stuff myself as its cheeper and nicer. Only think we order is chinese as i hate it but OH loves it so he orders that.
Chinese or Indian. Love them! Had a Chinese just this past weekend actually...I've been dieting recently so it was a nice treat. Every birthday we have an Indian from our favourite shop and have been doing so for the past 8 years or more.
We always have one on Christmas Eve too. Means I can get everything ready for Christmas Day and only have plates to wash up.
Ah, but delivery is only free within five miles. You might have quite a hefty delivery charge to pay. And - I might be wrong here - but I have a feeling it might be cold by the time it reaches you.
Hmm - bit further than five miles. And probably would be not only cold but well and truly off by the time it arrived!
Home made I cook in bulk then freeze remainder so depending on what I feel like just pop in microwave heat & eat
I also do as best as I can, but there are times when I am desperate for a meal that someone else has prepared and cooked for me.
The nearest Chinese is nearer than that, but does not deliver and in any case is not Kosher so out of the reckoning for me. As for Indian - none that I know of. So my secret indulgence is to occasionally telephone one of my taxi driver friends and ask them to bring me a shwarma. But sometimes I think of all those menu cards my son and his friends had [none were bothered about Kashrut but then young men living away from home...] and I think oh how lovely just to pick up the telephone and have whatever you fancy delivered whenever you fancied it!
I don't really do takeaways. If I was going to have a takeaway it would probably be Indian. I don't really like pizza - only the garlic bread option - or Chinese or fish in batter.
A Thai restaurant has opened here recently - I've heard nothing but good things about it. I'm very tempted...
I don't like eating out as I like to know what's gone into my food, specially after watching the TV program "Call the council"
It is not so much a matter of eating out Tina - it is more having a meal cooked for you and served up for you, with no preparation and no washing up afterwards. Kind of like having someone make a cup of tea for you when nobody has done that for decades. When you know that you are physically unable to do more than make yourself a cup-a-soup or a pot noodle.
