Are we going to see lots of dogs being given up now thanks to the new dog laws?

Looking at the recent thread by Lais, are we going to see more dogs being given up or put to sleep now because of the new dog laws?

I can see It certainly putting people off getting large breeds..

It remains to be seen how seriously the authorities will handle this new law, It only takes one awkward person and an awkward police officer who does not like dogs to create a problem.
but I think probably the answer is yes it will eventually lead to more dogs being handed in, simply because the owners will be afraid of what ‘might happen’ and rather than take responsibility for their dogs its easier just to get rid.

I agree Vee - if responsible dog owners like us are now thinking twice about breeds we love, I can only imagine lesser dog-lovers using this as an excuse to give up dogs. I hope it doesn't happen, but can't help thinking the new laws are just going to cause more problems than they fix.

I wish that even basic dog laws were acted on here, where dogs are seen as very much a throw-away commodity.

Too many people living in apartment blocks in towns keeping large breeds and then discarding them once they pass the cute puppy stage. Too many people getting puppies "because the children want one" and then discarding them once the children get bored.

Even though there are, thankfully, not many deaths or serious injuries reported, there are some reports of dog fighting - but only when it makes the news. And who knows what goes on that does not make the news?

For one thing, I have never heard or read about dog cruelty or neglect as I read about almost daily in the UK media - probably because of the throw-away mentality here. But oh how I wish that even the basic laws were adhered to here.
