    Dogs tied to park railings

I took a short cut through park today & counted no fewer then 16 dogs tied up to the railing of the kiddies play area, I know its nice to go out as a family with your dogs, but these dogs are tied up to railing in the direct sun light, there's no shade for these poor dogs or any water bowls, all of the dogs were panting heavy specially the long coated ones.

I couldn't just walk away from the poor dogs & do nothing, so I grabbed some sandwich /salad containers out of the bins, went to the toilets washed the containers & filled them with water & started putting them down for the dogs (god knows what it must of looked like me going through the bins) not one of the dogs owners asked what I was doing or even thanked me.

Why can't people make sure their dogs are in the shade with plenty of water, or either leave their dogs at home on hot days, so many dogs die each year from sun stroke & from being left in cars, I wish people would think if its to hot for them being in the sun/car then its going to be far to hot for their dogs.

Sorry for ranting on but it really makes my blood boil seeing dogs tied up in the direct sun light or left in cars.

totally agree with you 6jrt's, makes me so mad too. its just senseless, I have done the same ( bin rooting) but I didn't care either, told one "person" what I thought when I saw his dog in a car, no open window and the temp was about 24 degree's.

I have to change my whole routine in summer as temperatures here can get up to 35C . No "walkies" between 10am and 6pm and no outings in the car either except on days when the weather is cooler. I have stick-on sun filters for the rear windscreen and side windows and I open all the windows about 3 inches to allow for air to circulate. There's only one supermarket in town that has any shaded parking but even so I put one of those silvery coated shields on the front window to block out the heat .... then its a quick dash around the shop to grab what I need. I always carry a container of cold fresh water with me plus a 2 litre bottle of frozen water, just in case and I make sure my dog/s have a drink before we head home.

This is M'boi trying to keep cool on a hot day 3 summers ago ... with a wet towel over her head!

When it gets hot here the tarmac melts, the concrete get red hot & I have had one GSD that got blisters on her pads just by walking on the pavement.
I walk all my 6 at 5am & around 9ish & then at night, when its cooler, I put frozen yogurts out for them to keep them all cool throughout the day (makes a hell of mess but they do keep the dogs cool) & I put the pool out for them too.

You could try asking the council to put some notices up around the play area warning of the dangers of dogs out in sun to long

There are signs everywhere telling dog owners not to tie their dogs to the railing but no one takes any notice of them, there are mobile kennels on park during summer (its big gazebo with cages in side) but no one use them because its £2 per dog, so owners just tie the dogs to the railing.
During the months of June to September all dogs have to stay on leads, but again owners ignore this sign & let their dogs off their leads.
There's a big dog show on park on first Sunday of June & every year the RSPCA, Police, Vets & dog wardens end up removing dogs from cars, there are signs telling you not to leave dogs in cars, after every class it comes over speaker not to leave dogs in cars, but still people leave their dogs in the car, last year 63 dogs were removed from cars/vans, then when they fetch their dogs back they give same excuse "I parked in shade & windows were partly open"
The RSPCA even had posters up showing a dog that had died in a hot car on foot exit/entrance but still it was ignored.

I'd print out a notice and take it with me next time, then hang it up. Of course worded a bit stronger than the friendly council notices :081:

This drives me nuts. Ive phoned the police a few times over dogs in cars. Makes me laugh when owners come back to find there window smashed and dog gone as it serves them right. Phoebe hates the heat so i make her ice lollys and she loves them. Only plain water and i make them really weak with cranberry juice. She crunches away on them. Once when out when it was really hot i bought her a ice lolly from the van and somebody told me i was nuts and wasting me money.

I freeze natural yogurts for my 6, but floor does get messy with the melting yogurts, but I just mop floor clean afterwards

Joe Bloggs and family don't seem to notice that the sun does not stay in one place, (I know it's us that move, but you know what I mean). They will often park in the shade, and even put up a screen and leave water, but fail to realise that half an hour later the sun's direction has changed and is on a different window.
