    Am I missing something ..........................

Why are breeders so intent on producing "tea cup puppies" & more to the point why are "people" so fascinated in owning them ?

I have opened my local free paper to find 6 adverts advertising tea cup puppies which laid out are :

Lovely rare parti & Café Au Lait coloured tea cup Poodle's ready to go black/white dogs £1,200, Apricot/white dogs £1,400, Café Au Lait dogs £1,600, black/white bitches £1,400, Apricot/white bitches £1,600, Café Au Lait Bitches £1,800

Must have teacup Chihuahua's long & smooth coats prices start from £1,500 for dogs & from £2,000 for bitches

Fluffy cuddly teacup Pomeranian Puppies look like little teddy bears please phone for more details.

All the range tea cup Yorkies bitches £1,000 & Dogs £750, both parents are KC registered but not puppies hence prices

Beautiful tea cup Maltese Puppies For Sale very playful dogs £850 & bitches £950

Very rare tea cup Papillon puppies, male Tri coloured £2,000 female Tri coloured £2,500, male red/white £1,000 female red/white £1,200, male black/white £900 female black/white £1,000,
    rusty/white males £1,500 rusty/white females £1,800,

Its obviously I am missing something when it comes to tea cup breeds, as I can't figure out why anyone would want to own or breed an tea cup puppy, I can fully understand why people want to breed & own the normal size toy dog breed i.e Chihuahua, Toy Poodle, Pomeranian, Yorkies, Maltese, Papillon, but why would anyone want to own a tea cup puppy/dog that can come with multi health problems is beyond me, years ago these "tea cups" were known as the runt of the litter.

When I bred K9 & Skye my JRT's I had a runt in the litter which is Dottie, she has a hole in her heart, I know in 10-11 years times (she then be 15-16 years old) she will have to have prescription drugs to help her, depending on how bad she will be in 10-11 years time is whether or not I let her go to rainbow bridge or keep her on meds for rest of her life.

Breeders that sell "tea cup" puppies won't tell you if they are ill, some breeder never have their tea cup puppies seen by a vet at all, when you buy any size of puppy the vets will tell you to settle the puppy in for a week, before bring them in to be checked over, the breeders of "tea cups" are hoping you will get so attached to the puppy during that first week & will not return the sick puppy back to them.

It concerns me too. Almost all the ads I have seen for Chihuahua and Yorkshire Terriers stress how tiny they are, and have pictures of them posing next to objects like a remote control to demonstrate their size.

I'm getting a Chihuahua puppy in a couple of weeks time from a breeder I trust (Pepe the standard poodle, came from her). I've seen both parents - far, far bigger than most Chihuahuas I've seen and in no way delicate looking.

There seem to be a lot of Chihuahuas being bred and presumably being sold, but I rarely see them out and about. Does this meet they're never taken for walks? Such a pity.

Well they're bred for money plain and simple. as to why people want to own them, probably for their so called rarity value and they can brag about how much they cost. At that size they appeal to those odd people who like to carry their dog everywhere they go, forgetting that dogs have legs and are perfectly capable of walking. They'll probably lose interest in them before their 2nd birthday anyway.

We have more tea cup Chihuahua's here where I live being carried in handbags, I know one is now 3 years old & yet only looks like 12 week old puppy, have never seen it walk at all.

As above only one reason why they are bred for money, and only one reason to buy them for rarity.

If only those who buy them new that teacup equals runt of the litter, you bred the smallest to the smallest and call them teacup, yrs ago they would have been given away or sold at cost.

Sadly as long as there is a market for them breeders will continue to advertise them as such.
l dread to think what the next fad will/could be.

people just like them because tini things have a cute factor and they stay looking like puppies for ever. I personally dont get it and think a pup that small would last 5 mins here before ive stood on it. much safer with a dog i can actually see. Dad has yorkies but they are big. Cleo the mum was the size of an average westie and the pups we sold were all advertised at big chunky pups. even though the sire was a normal toy yorkie the pubs are all much bigger than your average yorkie. A friend has just got a teacup yorkie and i admit to being fascinated with this tini puppy when she came home. I could fit her in my pocket! And thats why people want them and why they will keep being bred. Its not a situation i see ending any time soon
