A new breed for me , met a couple today at the show, a lady has imported two and brought them along for socialisation....there are only 13 in the country and, she said they will hopefully be able to exhibit them at discover dogs in November... can't load a photo, but they look a bit like between a portie and Spanish water dog?...
Oh, very nice! Sounds as if they're a sound breed with a good temperament. There was mention of someone from Exeter and someone from Buckinghamshire - was the lady you met one of them?
I don't think so...not sure she said she was from Nottingham way ? As for temperaments, she says they are a work in progress, as they are still a primitive breed so temperaments need to be worked on, they are weary of strangers, and have a guarding instinct , but the two I met were lovely though, you don't clip them and they don't moult .....
I have never seen one 'in the flesh' Jackie ... Also known as ''Cão da Serra de Aires'' they do look rather nice
That's interesting. But surely you'd have to keep them well brushed? Although perhaps their coat texture is such that they don't matt. I know if I let Pepe's poodle coat grow long and didn't brush it he'd end up very matted and uncomfortable. Which is why I now take the easy way out and have it clipped very short!
Well that's what I thought too, but she says the coat care is minimal ... their coat is a single coat and like porties can come in a variety of textures ...I guess a quick brush once a week may do it
No Azz, they are not, the KC does not recognise them yet...there has to be certain number in the country , then they will go on the import register.
There is an app called Petsie which includes Portuguese Sheepdog and has lots of lovely pics of them. Very like Catalan Sheepdog (and related to them). Gorgeous looking dog. Wouldn't mind one myself. But I'm guessing they need similar level of mental stimulation to a Border Collie?
Have seen 2 of these at a fun dog show (no cc given in these dog shows) they were in the not KC registered sheepdog ring, I was trying hard to identify them, I knew the Border Collies, GSD, Bearded Collie, Rough Collie, Old English Sheepdog, Belgian Shepherd, Welsh Sheepdog, Shetland Collie & Lancashire Heeler, but could not put a name to these 2 dogs, I thought they were cross breeds & now I know they are Portuguese sheepdogs.
