Met a beautiful HUGE boy this afternoon think his owner said he was a leonburger - never seen one before but he was lovely so friendly and said hello to Betty so gently even Mollie who is very afraid at the moment was able to say hello to him. Big leap forward for her.
Speaking to his owner we compared food quantities his gets 2lb meat a day Betty gets half an ounce of food 3 times a day LOL
A chap up the road here has a Leonberger bitch 'Daisy' and a male Golden Retriever. The Leon towers over the retriever and is far more gentle too. A gorgeous dog
They're lovely. They are a lot more popular on the continent, I've seen plenty in Switzerland. And before we decided to get Wassily (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landseer_(dog)) we were considering a Leonberger because they are gentle giants just as much, and really really good looking!!!
2 Leos are walked in a playing field near us. Unpleasant characters. Once one of them chased and pinned down an elderly Irish Setter who was just minding her own business quite a distance away and this dog went after her. Frightened her out of her little brain. They seem to want pin down every dog around. Yet they are off lead until they do something, then they go on leads.
My OH used to have 3 a male and 2 females. His male suffered bloat 3 times and even after having the stomach tacked it happened again and he lost him at just 3 years old. He still looks longingly at Berger's Ivan on here.
but that behaviour is really not usual to this breed :-( I know them really as just gentle gigants, as it's said here as well and here they are far more common the Name Leonberger Comes from the town Leonberg where they come from, near Stuttgart, the capital City of Baden Württemberg in South Germany
lovely natured gentle giants mine played with one all the time until he had problems and had to pts aged 11.
My brother had 2, he lost one a couple of years ago to bloat at 5yrs old. They are gentle giants if like any dog they are brought up correctly, unless they stand on your toes then Oooooft ouchie
aint they just loveable? though quite dangerous! ...if one of them, unwittingly would lie down on mine!
Never the less - they represent 100% of the Leonberger population in my town. So anybody who has come across them has not been impressed.
Well thats the owners fault!!!!! Brought up properly they are the most fantastic breed of dog ever! I was recently in the middle of 12 Leo's and They(and I) had a wonderful time. Im getting my 2nd Leo in 3 wks time and cant wait
